Sylmar Quake 1971 (6.6)

The Northridge Quake was really destructive because it triggered off some faults that hadn't had any activity in many, many decades. Some of the faults were unknown to seismologists until the quake hit. Definitely an 'E' ticket ride..

Back when they still did underground testing, a particularly large test was expolded that caused tremors felt all the was to Las Vegas. News reports at the time said when the shaking hit the casinos, gamblers paused for about a split second and then carried on with their games, totally ignoring

Good post with good stats Thx vienna

You have to remember that this is the biggest quake that most of if not all of the east coast has had in recorded history.

And that suits me just fine thankyouverymuch. Hurricanes are bad enough enough without earthquakes, wildfires, mudslides, volcanoes, tsunamis, boils, locusts, plague and whatever else is bothering California.

Well, Irene is working its way towards the South-East coast, last time I heard South Carolina was the projected impact point. Delayed intensification could make it a hefty bugger.

EDIS shows problems with two nuclear powerplants due to the earthquake, but it says it's minor (and I hope it stays that way)

5.8 is not that strong probably.

In strong earthquake people would find it terrifying even just standing up as the ground moves into every direction as if an invisible giant playing with it. Standing up would be scary and requires a struggle somewhat but especially strong nerves, running however would be IMPOSSIBLE without falling all over. In strong earthquake most people would kneel down with hands holding the ground out of fear and to get a sense of bearing/balance.

Most people would think that earthquake causes mere tremors but they couldn't be more wrong as in truth the ground would literally move all over the place.

if it was just tremor, mild shaking or swinging that would mean the earthquake is not that strong or not that near or not that shallow but if the ground literally moves all over, start praying and get out as fast and as best as you can if possible.

So if the Earth were to open up and swallow DC:

1. would anybody care? editor's note, hopefully AVG, Growler, and even Platapus would survive/ be okay.
2. should we even bother rebuilding? (rebuild the Smithsonean)

Grouch Marx: "Why don't you go home to your wife? I'll tell you what - I'll go home to your wife. Aside from the improvement, she'll never know the difference."

What would happen if Washington, D.C. were swallowed up whole by the earth?

"Aside from the improvement..."

Too bad it happened during holidays(I assume the house reps are taking their break term). If not if 'the house' were to cave in, the Republicans would be most at loss. If not at worst the politicians would be snapped out of their doldrums and childish behavior.

The thoughts of death brings . . . . positive realization of what actually matters.

Posted in the Capitol thread, but I figured I'd add here that I felt nothing today. I feel left out.

Hey, I live on the West Coast. I really feel left out.

Considering near where the epicenter was located I blame Generals Lee and Grant. They're probably at it again.

Well, Washington Monument and the National Cathedral got damaged. The former is closed indefinitely as they say, which rather sucks as I had tickets to go up the thing on Saturday morning

And now with Irene heading for the east coast, this weekend may get even more disasterific yet.

All the information is coming from locations from around the center, but nothing I have seen from dead center of the quake.

That's because they are all................dead!

God willing the country will pull through this.

News from the epicenter: A couple of ceiling tiles fell on a couple of heads at the Louisa County High School, which resulted in the entire federal government in Washington, D.C., two hours away, taking the afternoon off to visit the local bars.
