Just because of my awesome leadership of course.
No one else understands the art of leading.

You nailed it alright

Schroeder demonstrates the Marshal Schwerin type of leadership:

"Let all brave Prussians follow me."

- Marshal Schwerin, seconds before being killed by a cannonball at the Battle of Prague

I just demonstrated braveness beyond the call of duty. I allowed the enemy flak to focus on me so that you could escape unharmed. I will build a memorial for me once I get back to the world of the living.

But I got four Italian fighters on my tail.

Well, it seemed to work for me, but not for Spud. I made three passes and didn't get a single scratch. In fact it wasn't until I made it to the other side of the airfield on the first pass that I even noticed any Archie. Most of it seemed to be aimed too high to hit me. I think it also helped that the Archie was banging away at Hunters section before we arrived IIRC.

Aye, we managed to distract the heavy flak for a while before you arrived.

Yes, but you made the mistake to survive. So no memorial for you.

Won't be on tonight, off to see a film about an Arab who keeps falling down spike pits, or at least that's what it was about the last time I played it...and that was in the 1990s...

Somehow I suspect the topic was more appealing in the 90's.

But nvm that, have fun.
