Nice find Kai. When does History become Philosophy and vice versa??
"Without this there'd be no Hitler" etc . Some thoughts...... Poor Varus isn't here to give his account of what happened. You don't become a commander of 3 Roman legions cause you're a dickhead. There's a lot more to this than whats come down to us as "History". Reenactors...great guys, I gather there's thousands now worldwide living the Roman life. A lot of Romans escaped, one in particular rallied his men and eventually made it back to Gaul. He was decorated and became one of Caligula's guards/killers. Augustus....I've always found the guy to be VERY curious. Why did Julius Caesar ( supposedly ) name Octavian as his heir???? and not his acknowledged adopted son Brutus, whom he loved...right up to the end. Octavian/Augustus.....2 different blokes...???? I know the official history Suetonius etc...Octavian changed his name to embody the spirit of the new Rome he was building etc. I don't buy it. Very dodgy.

Hi Arnold,
had hoped you'd find it interesting I am by far not as proficient of roman history as i would like to be, it is like seeing things here and picking up things there, and after some time you get a kind of a lose net with some known points attached here and there. And the more you see the more things fall into place. There was a great exhibition in Brunsvick about a roman-german scrap at the "Harzhorn" region 12 years or so ago, previously unknown. Maximinus Thrax (one of those short-lived Caesars of the later roman empire) came back from a punishing expedition from the river Elbe, and was assaulted by "german" troops, and prevailed. First direct evidence that roman soldiers marched hundreds of miles into unknown territory for recconnaissance as for military purposes regularly, much farther than previously assumed. The scientific world just had not believed the roman scripts and reports and had thought of them as exaggeration or translation errors. Varus being a lawyer unexperienced in all things military surprised me, really not sure what to make of this theory I take it every roman in a higher position would have had some military knowledge, just being a basic necessity at the time (?) Augustus (next month named in his honour, like july for Julius etc.) sure had made Rome a great place to live, almost all things roman were thriving, a rather peaceful interval in roman history – until the Varus battle. Will look for Suetonius, no idea Greetings (still packing together photos .. soon .. )

The Barritus. Sure...it's Hollywood and nobody knows what it sounded like. And were there many different versions??? The Barritus. A Germanic war "chant" made by "echoing" into your shield. Adopted by the Roman Army?...depends who you talk to. On a side note, this film "Fall of the Roman Empire" 1964? is really good costume wise - colours/styles from all over the Empire. And Sophia Loren is at her most "beautifulness". Maybe it was the cold weather but her face - wow.
