Default Night Attacks - How?

How on earth do you guys manage to attack anything at night??

Saw my first convoy but to tell you the truth I couldn't make heads or tales through the scope. I surfaced only to meet the local welcoming committee which weren't tossing flowers my way. Crash dived with damage taken.

That didn't turn out as planned!

Any tricks?

Hello,
I know this is really a cheat, but if you have visual contact with the enemy ships, and if you're looking in the right direction, the name of the ship shows up on the notebook on the upper right hand corner. When you see the name of the ship change, you know you're looking at something.

I have no idea how the pros do it. Maybe I should get a better monitor and turn up my contrast.

Get in front of them and wait. Once the lead ship passes by you can sneak in a little closer, so you're 1000m or less from the outward column of the convoy. Just sit and wait, as they pass you (merchants have horrible vision at night) let 'em have it, the just scoot away before anyone sees you.

Yeah, get their general direction of travel. Work you way to the front of their path . Remember you are low in the water and hard to spot. Attempt to stay way from the escorts as best possible. Once ahead and they are steaming towards you, sit and wait until a solution comes to take out a few. You will not get them all but a few going down beats none at all! It is hard at first but you get it. Sometimes I just stop and lock the UZO to find out their general path of movement. Once I have an idea of that, off I go to beat them to the front of the line!

I get in front and side on to the convoy . Use your binocs to checkout where the escorts are . I get in position so i can approach at 7mts depth(decks awash) and 2 knots max .

How about night surface attacks within the convoy? That was the standard in the early war. I always have trouble getting in on the surface. Either I don't wait for enough darkness or I can't see enough in the dead of night to slip in. And there isn't much mention of that in any wiki.
