I've found the same thing as well. If I drag the crew around manually all is well, but if I click the buttons I often crash the game. Don't use the buttons and you'll be fine. Also don't forget that you can click on a compartment and then right click on crew to move them there, which is much faster than dragging each individually.
I didn't realize you could click on the groups like that & avoid the buttons. I only clicked 'en masse' when I wanted them to rest..
