I'm using a zero second fuse now. Makes it more realistic. If every bomb in WWII had had a timeable (is that a word?) fuse they would not have invented things like retarded bombs. It makes the entire bombing stuff even a bit more interesting because now you can't fly the bomb "into" the target anymore but have to drop from a much higher altitude.Compared to the accuracy of WWII dive bombings I'm still too good but at least not every single bomb is a direct hit anymore.

Yeah, although there are some incidences on special missions when a timed fuse is preferable, Operation Jericho for example used an eleven second fuse, but for your standard bombing run it's explode on impact.

Actually, I think most bombs could be fitted with one in special cases, at least the American ones could. For example, the bombs used at the Battle of the Bismarck Sea were normal anti-shipping bombs bundled together and fitted with delay fuses.

I am aware of that there were delayed bombs. But I guess you won't get a delay fuse for your every day mission.

Your every-day mission doesn't involve bombing at altitudes so low that you can get blown up by your own bombs, but if that's your mission, why not have the delay fuses?

Why did they invent retarded bombs if delayed fuses were in such large supply?
Why did I never see any footage where the bombs exploded some time after hitting the ground? I don't want to say that there were no delayed bombs, I'm just not convinced that every fighter bomber was equipped with them.

IIRC, most fighter bombers used impact bombs. Delayed fuse bombs were used mainly to attack buildings and sometimes ships. It's not a case of them being short in supply, just not suitable for the mission purpose. After all, plenty of delayed action fuse bombs were dropped on Britain during the Blitz, as well as the butterfly bombs which could be fitted with three different type of fuse, an impact fuse, a clockwork fuse which could be set from anywhere between five to thirty minutes after impact, or the anti-handling fuse which would detonate if it was moved after impact, it was a nasty little bastard and first used against Ipswich, which isn't that far from where I live now
Naturally, it was a tactic employed by both sides, I have no doubt that Bomber Command dropped their own delayed fuse bombs and mines on Germany. |

I would assume that a delay fuse could be unsuitable for tactical bombing because it would give men and vehicles time to scatter before it exploded, which would completely ruin the effects of accurate ground attack.

Ugh, really since when did we fly aircraft that where superior to the AI's?
apart from the obvious ones (P11, Po2 etc) with comparable aircraft like the 109E and the Hurri, you can take the Hurri and feel outclaseed and you can take the 109E and feel suprised that your outclassed again as in a climb the Hurri gains upon you and if it has the chance inflict damage with ease if you're not carefull. the AI stinks in Il2, we known that for years. the fokker aint ''the'' aircraft but we've flown things far worse then it. Wednesday I refly the last mission to get it right, and will look into the rest of the missions to see if there are changes in the AI's dificulty and will raise it when required. HunterICX
