Default I wonder how long. . . ?

I ask this question , not to simply rehash all the DRM flaming that has and is taking place but just being curious. Is there anyone out there who may be "in the know" more than the rest of us Joe Blogg gamers (like a mole in Ubisoft?) who can hazard an educated guess to: " I wonder how long Ubisoft will hold out 'til, in the light of their obviously losing many much-desired subscriptions, they " eat humble pie ", " cave in to the obvious " , " take a reality check ", and apply the patch which will enable offline playing ? "

They won't because they will set a precedence. There are too many people copying games etc and it's in everone's interest if dev make money out of their games

I hear you but since games will be pirated anyway, I would think Ubisoft cannot afford to lose what cash they would get if they had applied a less draconion security measure.

No. No one can predict what Ubi will do.

I agree with you but are there any accurate figures of exactly how many people haven't bought this game because of the internet thing?
I think some people are moaning about it just to moan. I don't like it myself but I don't like the thought of not playing SH more

They have always been quiet, but have always produced a patch in the past, ubi certainly are not informative or even freindly towards their customers, though i believe a patch will arive before too long, and hopefully sense will prevail here.

hmmm.... Yeah - it's hard to assess the situation. They have so many other games they get continual revenue from they may well afford to stick it out anyway. That's why I would like to be a fly on the wall in Ubisoft HQ. Time will tell, but I think you are right - personally I think they will not back down.

Would love to see that but for the present, I think they will at least hold out for sufficient time to show everyone thry are not giving in to the present-day protests. Then as a " magnanimus gesture " they will offer the offline patch.

I don't think it's possible to get accurate figures on a negative. It might be thousands, or it might be dozens. It might be the handful here and there who have actually said they won't, and no more. There is absolutely no way to tell.

My guess is that it will be six months to a year, depending on how it sells. They'll remove it when prices have dropped and it doesn't matter anymore.

But that's just my guess.

Did anyone check out the latest steam sales for the week ending 21 March?

  1. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  2. Dragon Age: Origins Awakening
  3. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II Chaos Rising
  4. Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight
  5. Metro 2033
  6. Dragon Age: Origins Digital Deluxe Edition
  7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  8. Assassin's Creed 2
  9. Aliens vs. Predator
  10. Supreme Commander 2
I thought that being immune to piracy would make Assassins Creed 2 number one, and not lag behind pirated games with weak DRM and relative unknowns like Metro 2033! After all, the Anti-Piracy Brigades(APB) have stated that every pirated game is a lost sale and with 1 million copies of the original Assassins Creed being pirated that should mean 1 million extra sales of AC2, right? Err....right APB fanatics? Another nail in the coffin of the piracy affects sales theory.

Check out Dragon Age with virtually no DRM and how well it sells!

If I was a UBI exec I'd order the removal of the DRM as soon as possible. Doesn't seem to help with sales even without pirates.

No, because that's MY guess too! Why are you stealing my guess?

Seriously though - when the cost of maintaining the DRM servers for SH5 outweighs the sales of the title itself, it would only make sense to drop the DRM. Probably 6 mo to a year, as Steve said.

What's surprising about that is that Assassin's Creed is by no means a small or unpopular franchise, yet it's getting beat by MW2? That game's been out for quite some time now.

I remember some years ago, there was quite a stink about Ubi's Starforce protection. Didn't they remove that, or did it just become so annoying they didn't reuse it in SH4 (can't remember!). Starforce DID hurt sales, though - "they" learned THAT particular lesson. I seem to recollect Steam downloads didn't go so well...
