LAMO! I used to play Stock and IUB on about 30% and sink entire convoys! boy - those days are gone :rotfl:

Nowadays about 5 or so ships per patrol, (with GWX on about 70% realism)
If i managed to take out a tanker or two in a convoy - and live - Im a happy bunny.

I rarely make it home from patrols though, I get my self killed alot - probably because I love fighting it out with aircraft, I know its stupid but i just cant help myself

GWX 1.03, 74% realism, playing for 18 months...

If I have a deck gun, I budget 1.5 torps per ship until spring 1940, then 1.2 torps per ship when the mag-pistols are fixed. How does this shake out?

1) In deck-gun weather, I use the DG to take out lone, small merchants. No torps.

2) In deck-gun weather, I may use one torp to cripple lone larger merchants, and use the DG as needed -- but I usually try the DG first.

3) In poor weather, I tend to let small merchants go... why pop a 2K passenger/cargo with two torps when one will wreck an 8K pyro?

4) In poor weather, I will use up to two torps on a >5000 ton target. If it doesn't sink, I will follow it at least 12 hours until either it sinks or the weather clears for DG... then I will sacrifice another torp.

5) Convoys... very generally, I fire four, budget for two hits, expect three. I kill the stragglers or wait for them to sink.

6) If it is Hood, anything goes, short of ramming her.

I usually go home with one or two torps, so the math is easy enough. On a VII, I look for 9-11 kills on average; on an IX, I look for more. The "on average" is important... trying to "catch up" on five dud torps in a single patrol is suicide; on some patrols, you are just going to go home empty handed. But it evens out.

because your job as a uboat captain is to destroy enemy shipping
not waiting for bigger targets

I do wrestle with that... IRL I should sink the first target that comes along. And, yet... using that logic, I should sink trawlers, fishing boats and sloops -- they are, after all, merchants -- with torpedoes, if the weather doesn't allow deck gunning.

I don't think many of us waste deck gun ammo, much less a torp, on a sloop.

So where do you draw the line?

I interpret my "job" as "sinking as much enemy supply shipping as possible given the boat, equipment, crew and fuel provided." That's why a 2K passenger/cargo is going to get a pass from me on a stormy night in the North Sea... it's not worth the torp.

Don't get me wrong. I don't "cherry pick" targets. But I expect a certain risk/reward ratio -- otherwise, I am just putting the boat at risk.

A few more people, if they're honest, probably do what you do....I certainly do.
Play the game the way it works best for you

patrol 10- first time i sunk 8 ships, and some heavies at it. Sinking rate should improove from now on, as i just picked up brand new IX.

As to sinking passenger/cargo- i have no morale or tonnage problems. As long as it has enemy flag on the mast i will strive and find the best way to sinking it.
Sloops, and fishing boats provide my deck gun crew with valuable targets.
