Yeah I had the same problem, and it seems that you have to reinstall GW and avoid ticking that "Generic Ship Name" thing.

Edit: Guess he beat me to it...didn't press post and had the post sitting there for like 3 minutes lol

It is simply a part of the realism that many wanted and received with GW. Vanilla version not only told you what kind of ship but also, color, how many aboard, what port it was heading to, what movie was playing on the fantail and who is dining with the Captain tonight. It just added some realism and makes you have to make an approach like the u-boat to identify friend or foe.

I don't really get it. Maybe I have installed GW the wrong way somehow, but in my game unidentified ships show up as "troop ship" or "cargo" or "destroyer", but when I use the recognition manual they only show up as "contact". Wouldn't it make more sense the other way around?

If you haven't installed the generic map contacts mod you don't need the recognition manual for recognition. And if you play with auto targetting you don't need it at all. But yes I think you're correct it should have been the other way around. So have you installed the generic map contacts???

Yes, I have installed generic contact names.

Are you saying that the ship type show up automatically in vanilla SH3? I've never played the game without GW so I wouldn't know.
