Recorded in 1958, this theme would still be usable in modern film/TV and sound just as fresh; the true genius of Henry Mancini was his ability to match his compositions to the feel of the media for which he was writing; when Mancini was approached by his longtime film collaborator Blake Edwards, to compose an opening theme for a new detective TV series Edwards was writing producing and directing (his first effort in TV), Mancini came up with this theme, which perfectly suited and encapsulated the sophisticated Noir tone of the series; recorded at the historic Radio Recorders studios in Hollywood (Elvis' favorite recording studio), Mancini gathered some of the top jazz musicians in Hollywood as well as top studio musicians; the throbbing bass-heavy piano riff that runs through the theme was played by a guy named Johnny Willams who later found a bit of fame as composer John Williams; Williams learned from the best...
