^ A great film indeed and easily the best on the subject but far too many innacuracies for the serious Napoleonic student.

"The Charge of the Light Brigade" 1936 with Errol Flynn and David Niven.
1936....what an "interesting" year that was. |

Apocalypse Now Redux
Liked it... However... I didn't like the ending too much. There's no closure to the story. It just kind of cuts off. I'm left here wanting more. Solid 8.5 of 10 at the very least.

Apocalypse Now is essentially the short story Heart of Darkness at the end of both the protagonist(Willard) becomes the "god" that the antagonist(Kurtz) was.Only Willard chooses to destroy what Kurtz has created he still leaves a part of himself behind (like metaphysically ). So at the end there Willard says something to the effect of "I was not in their Army anymore" he is saying that he is no longer part of that system that way of things.
You really have to watch Apocalypse a few times to get every detail. For example I bet you did not notice that Colby(the previous SF man sent to kill Kurtz) did not kill himself he converted to follow Kurtz. The French rubber plantation in Cambodia where they bury Clean? That symbolizes how we cling to war even when the gig is up.The French where in Indochina(Vietnam,Laos,Cambodia) before the US was and they lost yet here you see these hardcore Frenchmen clinging to an utterly lost cause(by about 14 years). Kilgore is just as insane as Kurtz. This web page explains it well http://home.roadrunner.com/~jhartzog...tzwillard.html Here is another pretty good analysis http://www.fastenupyourseatbelts.com...wAnalysis.html It is a rather complex film(compared to the typical action flick). |

I saw it when it came out in the '60's. Loved it, especially the "period" animations, and of course the spanking scene.
On the youtube '36 version site the comments are quite interesting. Like the Light cav came on like a runaway express train and the Russian gunners had great difficulty getting a bead on them, and they tore through the enemy cav like a tornado, reformed and charged back. |

The Internship (Unrated)
I really really liked that one. Killed time on the way back from Branson by watching this. I've only seen the Unrated version. I don't know how it compares to the Theatrical version. 10/10. I don't watch a LOT of new comedy movies anymore because they usually suck...but this one is worth it.

It was a well done movie...but long. You really have to like....clear an evening just to watch it. And I agree on the part about Kilgore. It's one thing to have a confident leader...but that guy...whew. SWALLOW YOUR PRIDE.

As Stealhead said, "Apocalyse Now" is based on Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness" which made Conrad world-famous until today. This story was written in 1899.
So the director of the movie asks the question: "Is there any difference between the Colonial wars and the Vietnam war?, imo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_of_Darkness |

Here's a real treasure
"Fraulein Doktor" 1969, with the lovely Suzy Kendall, Nigel Green (the big Sgt from 'Zulu') and James Booth (Pvt Hook- also from 'Zulu'), and Kenneth Moore as the Head of British Intelligence. Great film. Plots within plots. A clumsy Romantic scene, just like in real life. Lots of suspense and action. Absolutely surreal battle scene towards the end. Controversial because of a certain scene, no not the naughty one, but when you see it you'll know it. There's a U boat in it an' all. Try to buy it though, no luck, unavailable. The only place you can see it is on youtube. Regrettably half way through the sound goes out of synch and stays that way.
