Ninja Turtle, you will enjoy the full four and half hour version....you will get to know the characters better.

Ah...time zones...My wife and I lived in Dunoon, Scotland for three years. My mother in law had a bit of a problem with the time difference between the US and Scotland. For the first few months she would wake us up at one in the morning to "chat". Really miss bombing around the single lane back roads in the highlands with our beat up old Mini Cooper

The Uncut version is best IMHO. I believe it's 4½ hours or something
like that.

Sure: With that length it is not exactly 'action-packed'...
If you are looking for more action and less athmosphere -
then the theatrical version is of course 'better'.

But I believe that most SUBSIM'ers will appreciate the
uncut version - because they know the typical 'boredom'
interrupted by hectic action all too well.

Of course - without time-compression the simulation
would be too tedious - but I myself do not use
it as much as in the beginning.

Also you get to know the characters much better.

the TV mini series that becomes the full length nearly five hours worth - is without question THE best version, because it resembles as much as possible the book by Lothar-Gunther Bucheim which in its self is a classic. and the tv mini series that becomes the full length nearly five hours worth of film is what he wanted any way - he was looking for about six hours...

90% of the time nothing happens.
its the 10% that decides whether you live or die.

happy viewing, you are in for a real treat if you've never seen the full length before.

(I prefer it with English subtitles - somehow their own language adds another level of realism.)

as an afterthought, Wolfgang Petersen who directs the film - to keep the realism thing going, travelled to different parts of Germany looking for actors who had the accents for the different crew personnel who came from these regions, so as to keep as much as possible to the book and the realism. Bucheim was not happy with the finished product and accused Petersen of turning War in to Hollywood - glamourising a miserable and deadly profession.
Petersen defended this by saying he had to get the German people in to see it - then, they could decide what they thought. the German people were not ready to confront their past, so he had to ease them in a little with a bit of poetic license. it became the highest grossing film in German history and the most expensive to make......and that last fact may still stand?

ps. if I have miss fired on information, please correct me

Well since I started this thread, it has surely had a lot of responses. I watched the full length Mini Series again last night and it's whipped up my passion for SH3.

I noticed on some of the scree shots of SH3, there are quite a few different interface screens. The one I like the most, is the one showing the officers bar on the far right of the screen. Does anyone know which mod has this interface? It looks better than the one I have which is the GWX version, with the officer icons on the bottom left of the screen.

Definitely! I'm glad that I speak German- and can play SH3GWX all
in German then you get audioclips from 'Das Boot'.
Best example: 'Jawohl Jungs wir haben ihn... [great cheering]...
Leise!' - that's the audioclip that plays when a torpedo hit its
target.

Well - with all respect to the late Mr. Buchheim - 'Das Boot' is
definitely NOT Hollywood...

I'll definitely be watching it in German with English subtitles. I'm pretty sure that when it was on TV when I was a little kid watching it with my parents (although I have a vivid memory shot of my dad sitting there watching whilst my mum quietly sat knitting a nice jumper for someone) it had subtitles and remember having to wait till the following week for the next episode. Gripping stuff. Those were the days.

It certainly helped with my decision to purchase again

And more than one u-boatman said similar bad things about Buchheim's book, so he really didn't have that high of a perch to preach from. Also Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, the real 'Alte' of U-96 and Hans-Joachim Krug, 1WO of U-219, served as technical advisors on the movie.

Yes, the movie takes certain liberties. So does the book. The movie in it's full 293 minutes can be hard to sit through. The book can be hard to read. Both are worth it. I just wish the book's two sequels were available in English.

Already got those Glenn. It's the full GUI that I am after, where the officers are shown on the right instead of the left of the interface screen. I think it might be Hitmans GUI or OLC_GUI_127

Ah sorry I can't help. My icons now are department images on the right side. I did have face images (not stock) but can't remember what mod they came from. However I might just use the links I suggested. They look fairly good

I'll be changing and improving a few mods in my list next time I'm docked

MaGui has the officers on the right hand side too...although not the Das Boot ones but they can be added quite easily

Yes you are right, this is the one I was after. Much better than the Stock/GWX interface. Now downloaded and installed. Easier to manage as well with more information displayed. Still shows the Das Boot Officer Icons as well, that I installed previously.

Thank's Kelly
