Daskal experimented with modding the default sky templates, to make them dark, and tested how this affects the overall colour palette of the landscape. The results is not too shabby, i would say

. Already now plenty of atmosphere.

I would bet my money on night battles implemented not before SB2 in late 2011, or 2012. that said, who knows what the modders come up with earlier, maybe. It is not the first attempt to test night colour palettes.

Note the John Carpenter-style soundtrack (from EF-2000, actually)
