I would say that this scratch built boat I'm working on now will cost close to $1,000.00 from start to finish. Worth it to me though. I'm enjoying the heck out of it. Plus, when I was a kid lack of knowledge and finance to do such things put a damper on this hobby. Now that I can afford and have the knowledge to do so it's great.
My kids are still amazed that a stack of balsa and bass wood now is a hull for a Lake Union Dream Boat.

I have the plans for a scratch build Higgins pt-boat I picked up in a boating magazine. It'd be fun to do, but I don't have the tools and the time.
I do have access to a 1/200 scale Yamato, if I wanted to build that. But there is the time/money/space issue.
