Hi, I'm currently using TDW's Magnum Opus and one of the mods in there is no hydrophone contact on surface. That's fine but I have to go lower then periscope depth to make it work (seems to start at around 15m). I'm not sure what the realism is supposed to be but I find it super annoying since it makes tracking targets A LOT harder then I'd like it to be. I tried adding "sobers realistic hydrophone operator " but that didn't change much.
edit: I did try removing Magnum Opus entirely after I saved in bunker/quit but loading that save makes the game crash so I'm kinda stuck with it. I guess what I'm looking at is a way to adjus the depth where the hydrophone becomes active. |

You must understand that realism makes it harder. It makes it real. You may want to get accustom to this sim with the default game for awhile. However I recommend you run your boat the way it should be a leave Magnum Opus on. Soon you'll learn to skipper the boat naturally and you'll have a sense of accomplishment to go with it.
You might be able to change the hydrophone settings in the TDW user options but I'm not sure about that. |

I totaly agree with you and am using the mod myself....i have a question though. Does the Hydrophone get more effective the deeper you dive? |

I'm not sure it does in the sim or not but I believe it supposed too. I routinely dive down below 25 meters and cut the engines off or run on slow. In SH3 this was the ticket to getting contacts. So far it seems to work in SH5 as well. With the New UI mod I think there is a user setting for this. At least where you don't hear anything to below 15 meters if memory serves. |

I've noticed that the boat is always few meters higher than the ordered depth. If I say dive to 15 meters, it goes only 13 m deep. I recently had a long patrol without any contacts and started to get paranoid if the hydrophones are working at all, but diving deeper seemed to help. Bug or not, but it keeps me on my toes.
So just to be sure, I also suggest you dive bit deeper than the basic periscope depth! |

Hi
Im back after being away for a while and I am just refreshing myself with some procedures etc. I am using TDW's Magnum Opus with manual targeting etc. Now Im having a littel difficulty with my sonar man , in that he can follow a target but when I ask him to use sonar to find the range - I get " No target selected" in log. Any idea? |

I find this quite annoying as i have to do all the work myself, i.e ask if there are contact, check my message box, try the hydrophone myself to find the other three contacts he did'nt report..etc. While i like to hit the hydrophone myself from time to time to get additional info, i would like the Sonarman to do his job in reporting verbily in the meantime...all was fine in previous SH games. |

Hello,
1st the hydrophone being only of use at greater depths is right, the boats dived to appx. 30-35 meters if they wanted to find contacts. Above that depth the surface noise of the waves would mostly screw up listening. So this is correct, in SH5. Which is why escorts never heard U-boats at periscope depths, due to same surface wave action noise in anything than comoletely calm seas. This is not correct, in Sh5. You have to look at the report log at the lower right, if you want to pick up contacts from far away, when cruising at time compression and submerged. The sonar guy will only talk to you when you order him to follow a close contact. As well if you really want to pick something up, you have to listen yourself, because in SH5 the sonar operator does not pick up sounds you yourself will easily hear. But you also have to be at 30 meters, of depth ! So listen yourself, do an hour of time compression, listen again and repeat. I hope this improves when you throw points at him, in the later game (?) Greetings, Catfish |

I think he wanted to say that sonar guy report the contact but when he want to listen the sound of the engine, with the hydro, from the spoted contact he is not able to hear (like mising sound files in game).
![]() I never heard about this problem before! |
