If on rare occasions I quote German original texts, then I usually only give short parts of it, or I add a link to a German text to an existing thread debate.

Here and now I make an exception, because the linked essay is so damn good and right on target that even if most people here will or cannot read it, the few capable to understand German should not be in danger to miss it.

With the exception of showing a - compared to the rest of the essay: surprising - naivety regarding the developements in Turkey, I agree with what is said here, and very much so.

It is a bit too long as if i would do a manual translation. If you really are interested in it, you can try whether or not a bot-translation gives you a reasonable result.

The source, newspaper Die Welt, is one of Germany's major news outlets and I see it as "centrist-slightly left" for the most.

Well, nothing really new, they take a step forward and we move one step back. Though I have to admit that I did not read the whole thing but about 50%. It was just too long.
