Yamato...
My mission... engage merchant shipping in the Celebes (sp) Sea. So I steam there, taking two days at standard.
I get near the inlet to [Sulu?] and my radar picks up a large task force. I say to myself, "what the heck", and position myself to end up dead center of all them bad guys. Set my depth for 75 feet and go silent, open all fishy doors, and wait... Mess of destroyers, DDs, etc, and two very large battleships, one of them the infamous Yamato. I fine tune my position to be within 3000 yards of her when she reaches 10 degrees of my starboard bow. As she approaches 20 degrees I ascend to 60 feet with scope raised... I pick her up and launch six in quick succession. My aim, 1/3 the way back from her bow. All six impact exactly where I want and the ship... doesn't blink. She does begin to go lower at the bow but off she steams with a big ole smile on her face. Man... was I bummed. Immediately after firing I hit Crash Dive and set my meter for 350... turned 90 degrees starboard and headed down fast as I can. I was able to evade the escorts and their DCing. Kinda disappointed... all went perfectly except no Yamy flag on my tower. ![]()

i usually kiss my torpedo bevore sending it on its way. so its came one day that i stopped the yamato with only 1 torpedo hit whithin the engineroom section ...
... needless to say it took another five, i think, to bring her down ... |

Found a rather interesting article about the one successful submarine torpedo attack on the Yamato during WW2 by the USS Skate. Apparently, her underwater protection wasn't quite as good as the Japanese thought it would be. Oddly enough due to Japanese shipping losses she was acting as a fast cargo ship of sorts at the time.

My personnal theory is that the Yamato exists solely to suck up valuable American torpedo.
Seriously, unless it's a) In port or b) the only capital ship in the group, it's not worth wasting torps. There's usually another BB or a CV around... Go for that instead. Sank a carrier with a single torp, once... Destroyed a late war Ise with three torpedoes. But the Yamato? Slammed 10 torps into her and she just sailled by. |

![]() I've never been able to figure out why the Japanese went through the trouble to build the thing. During all the night surface battles in the Solomons from 1942-43 in which the lesser ships of the IJN bled and died, the Yamato just sat at anchor up in Truk acting as a very expensive HQ ship. Apparently too precious to soil in a barfight. |

Of course, Bill Mitchell was right about air power. During the invasion of Okinawa, the Yamato was sent in to distroy the landing fleet and then beach on Okinawa to help bolster the defense- the ultimate Kamakazi attack. But, the air strikes from Admiral Mitscher's Task Force 58 sank the Yamato will all aboard before it could make good on its mission. So much for the big battle wagon.
I sank the Yamato with 8 torpedoes- six in the first flurry and two later after my guys reloaded. ![]() |

Do you think you might have gotten better results if you had spaced the six more along the hull?

Frankly, from all that I've read on this ship, no. Next time I encounter the big Y I'm gonna ignore it, move on to more profitable targets. ![]()

If your playing RFB, according to the manual, yes you would. The manual say's putting more than one fish into the same compartment will not do any further damage. The logic being, ships sink by way of flooding. If you put an additional fish in a compartment that has already flooded or is flooding, you are not really gaining anything, other than flooding that compartment faster.

I think TMO and FORS are the same, not sure about stock, but you need to spread them. If it's late war, I'll shoot below the keel. The job is not to sink it the first pass, but to slow it way down or stop it dead on the water. I find hitting it below the turrets and near the props will slow it down.
DD's are not, don't shoot 6, turn hard and give it the afts also. Even if the angle is bad that one or two hits may slow it way down. The last time I sunk it, I hit it with all six and one aftM14. I was carrying cuties, lol, and those two cuties seemed to chase it forever but finally hit. The next end around got 4 hits and that stopped it. I remember having 8 left, 3 cuties, but it did the job. The last time I harbor raped, it took 12 to sink it. |

Cutie VS the Yamato... That's kind of like going after a main battle tank with a pop gun :rotfl:
Althought I did get an insta-kill of a destroyer with a cutie last night. Must've hit the magazine or something. |

the yamato REQUIRES all 10 torps, you get parellel to her (preferably head on) so you get a rear firing solution the fastest.
wait for last second and let all forward fish go spaced apart if you can then WAIT untill the rear tubes can fire and let then all go. now crash dive and get the hell outta dodge dont wait to see what happens. (if you have it use ext cam to watch the action) the yamato can be sunk with 6-8 well placed shots spead out in different areas but most times you need 10 and if you try less, in most cases you wont get a chance to try again try my torpedo mod and you have a torpedo test mission where you can see just what it takes to sink each ship, and if your not worried about realism you might want to try the mod too |
