Default Type IXB question

Just started a new career to check out the Type IX boats. Currently on patrol in a IXB.

Looking for a few tips on patrolling with this, since I've been using Type VIIs thus far.

In particular, is the 37mm gun any good for AA defence? Unlike the 20mm, which has a magazine of 20 rounds, the 37mm is single shot - not my idea of an AA weapon. I'm not sure how it is against small ships either.

Also, I started the patrol with 21 torps - I thought load out was supposed to be 22? Or am I confusing this with another IX model?

Thanks.

i don´t agree , it´s very useful against fast boats o small ships. i rarely used it agains planes because i crash dive before... but is used a lot with ships

Where to patrol depends on the year. Freetown an area to hunt regardless of year of war. Loitering around the halifax area isnt a bad idea either since quite a few trans atlantic convoys that eventually cross the AL / AM grids start there.

The early war 37 MM heavly flak gun, is pretty much a popgun, but to be fair, its a multipurpose gun. You can use it on planes or to help finish off ships in conjunction with your deck gun. It's pretty much a popgun, but its better then not having it at all.

And yes, the IXB is supposed to have 22 torpdos, although stock game, and every mod since then left it at 21. Ive fixed it to have 22 in my tweakpack though :P , its really simple to fix.

Thanks for the answers. I'm now NW Ireland, AM51/52, Sept 39.

Can I change the 37mm for a 2nd 20mm back in base?

When IX/2 is availble then ya u can have two 20mm instead of one 20mm and that popgun.

And one important rule never go in to shallow water a Type VII may just get away with it but a big IX is a no, no. I used that 37MM AA gun on neutrals sailing to ward's enemy ports, I destroy there cargo and leave there ship intact most affective on the small ships and get in real close.

The single 37mm to be blunt is 'crap' However, if you survive long enough to upgrade to the twin 37mm I think you'll find it's the deadliest AA weapon you can get
