Optimize your FSX - graphics tweaks
Running my old machine I was finding FSX was running really slow. I found a copy of PC Pilot a couple months back and a month ago I picked up another copy (Issue 74) with a headline that read, on the cover,
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR FRAME RATES IN FSX - MASSIVE HINTS AND TIPS GUIDE! So of course, I bought it. Here's a complete transcription of the article, minus some of the informative parts, simply the list of tweaks. The person who is providing the tweaks is Matijs Kok Quote:
USING THE SETTINGS TO SUIT YOUR TYPE OF FLYING VFR SCENERY AND HIGHLY COMPLEX AIRCRAFT MESH SCENERY, MEDIUM COMPLEXITY AIRCRAFT and OTHER ASPECTS THAT AFFECT FRAME RATES If you guys would like any info on that, let me know. I'm going to take a breather. Hope this helps you like it did me! Thanks Mathijs!

Had a sleepless night tonight, and thus continued to test and experiment, and did some reading on the web.
On the DX10 option it needs to be said,m that this is no final implementation, but something like a preview mode, unfinished. It thus may look nicier and some people even report slightly higher frames (not all), but it also casues several grapohical artifacts, like external lights shining thorugh the views and airframe when looking out of the cockpit window, default textures in the ground shining through where they shoiuld be covered by scenery textures (streuck me with some German Airport sceneries, immediately gone when deactivating DX10), and more. Shadows in Flightsims I always deactivate and minimise, they always are a hog on frames, with relatively little visual value, since on most opportunities they would not play a role anyway (hehehe, SBP until today ships without any shadows at all...) But they can hit the system even when not being close to the ground. Texyture resolution, well, addon scneries often demand a minimum setting here. This recommendation should be followed. Same is true for the various graphics settings like traffic, scenery and autogen density. Addons often demand vertain settings here in order to show all individual objects included in the scenery. I recommend to check the English feature list for that FluSi-Fix tool I linked too in th eother thread, it alters many entries in the config and solves internal issues of FS that are not mentioned here and that many people have never heared of. It is in principle nothing else but a more comfortable way to edit the config both for the sim itself or individual planes. It has worked reliably for me since FS2002.

Three more tips.
FSX needs frames set to unlimited in order to acchiueve fastest texture reload, however, that leads to huge jumps in frame rates and directs more calculation power to frames than maybe is needed, witgh theressources for that lacking elsewehre. So the recommendation is to fix frames via an external tool to 30 frames. I used fps-limiter. IU now have a fixed framerate of 30 but still maximum terxture loading speed that FSX can get on my system. V-snych can be deactivated with such frames. Antialias and Ansitropic filtering should be set in the GPU driver, not in the sim'S options. I tried out an online automatic fsx.cfg modificator. You send your config, give some info on your system, they then modify the config file and set it up for download, and you can get it and replace the original default one with the modified version. I need to create some critical frame situations to see how big the improvements are, and the effects may vary on systems, so everybody should check and see for himself. The author is posting in the Avsim forums and seems to be a well-known guru there, or am I wrong? http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

Awesome. Thanks for posting this, I've been winging it for a while with marginal results. This should work wonders.
