Default New Skipper with general questions...

Hi everyone,

Just wanting to say a warm hello to everyone here.

A brief intro on myself;

At the tender age of 5 I got hooked on the original "Silent Service" and that of course got me addicted to the sequel a couple of years later. The flip side of these ancient simulator games was it turned me into an amateur historian which was unexpected, but something I certainly don't regret.

I got into SH4 (with the 1.4 patch) about 5 years ago, and have been playing it on and off ever since. At the moment, I have recently got back into it and have been having a lot of fun now that everything is working the way it should (finally). At this stage, I would label myself as an intermediate player using about 80% realism.

Having a read through here before, am I right in saying that you can get more upgrade patches higher than the 1.4 patch?

If so, are they easy to download and install, and are there any special software requirements that are needed? And how differently does it affect the game to what comes as standard?

Any info would be awesome!

Thanks very much!!

SHO Thanks everyone!

Thanks very much for such a warm welcome! And thanks for all your answers.

If the SH4 1.4 version is the most definitive standard version, what are the chances of a follow up to this game? (A pacific theatre one that is...)

What bugs does this 1.5 version fix? And what other extras does it add?

And since I'm asking questions, I have noticed some more things about SH4 that need clarifying;

- At the moment, I am on medium difficulty with about 80% realism. This is starting to get pretty easy in terms of evading escorts and sinking ships. Can you change the difficulty to hard during a career or can you only adjust the realism?

- Flicking through the recognition manual, there are some ships in here I have never seen let alone sunk, ie; a submarine tender or a minesweeper. Are these even in the game and has anyone ever seen these ships?

- When using dud torpedoes, aside from creating dud warheads, does it also affect the depth in which they run? And is it best to set them to contact or magnetic influence?

There's bound to be more questions, but this will do for now..

Many thanks!!

Are we still talking SH4? There is an 1.5 patch, which fixes some of the 1.4 problems and adds a u-boat campaign. Most of the best mods are made for 1.5. It is for pay only, but is fairly cheap, and is an asset even if you only play the American side.
