Default Convoy attacks at night

So recently I have returned to SH3 with GW installed for the first time and I am now shadowing my first convoy. In the same patrol I've already attacked, successfully, 2 lone merchants, but I couldn't see them until they were 2km away so I had to rely on my watch officer for all my info. How do you guys do it? How do you target different merchants at night with the limitations of the watch officer's "nearest target" option? I don't want to cheat and ask my Weapons Officer for a solution but thinking ahead I can't imagine it going otherwise.

AT night I tend to use my UZO and deck gun a lot (after I taken out the escorts)but am a bit like you when it's pitch black I normally can't see them till they are around 2500m away and try to take out as many as possible with the gun and torps.

I'm trying to get the hang of this also, on my second attack on this convoy. On the first attack in late afternoon, I was well ahead of the convoy and had a good handle on convoy course, looped around the right side and in towards the convoy, then ran in submerged and got two merchants on a nice 85deg approach. Trailed the convoy after that until dark, then looped back around ahead. Now it's 0430 and I can't see a thing much over 3km or so. I'm also having a much harder time getting a grip on the convoy course. I think they may have changed course after the first attack. I keep getting in a bad position and just now tried a surface attack from the convoy's portside ahead, quartering in, but ran smack into an escort. I'd saved before, 'cause I want to try this again.

Okay I agree with the periscope but if (depending what year your in) there's 1 or 2 escorts take them out and then use your deck gun and torps to max effect dependiong on what mod you got installed.

I am in the middle of a night convoy attack now and yes it is tricky--I guess you just have to use the weapons officer to get range and plot the targets right?--, but how do you all keep an accurate idea of the line-up of the convoy (i.e. how many rows and what ships are where?)? At night since you cannot verify this by eye, I am having trouble getting a good "picture" of the convoys ship positions because I cannot plot fast enough.

But you know what would make this buttloads easier??? and I want to kick the developers for not including such a simple thing---MAP NOTES!!!! I mean they were in SH2; wtf? anyway no one seems to be willing to mod this and maybe it can't be, but man that would make it much easier to keep track of marks on your map...esp at night.!

I use a sheet of scratch paper and layout the ships and their positions, escorts too if I can spot them.

Map notes would be great; a simple thing the devs overlooked.

I'm kinda flustered when I think about it. I am competent at taking down the data and getting all the numbers right but I use my eye for it alot. Now if I can't see the convoy at night how are you supposed to be able to penetrate the screen? I mean I'm assuming the captains in the early years would simply notice where the escorts were and would zip past them. But if I can't see anything how do I keep from running straight into one? I doubt it's total pitcxh black at night. Maybe I just need a netter monitor and to play in the dark.
