Default Game Thread: Australia vs Japan June 12

Well, today is the big day for Australia. The last time we played a match in the World Cup I was just 50 days old having been born the previous month. Now though we have returned and this time we are looking to improve on our 1974 performance. Firstly we are looking to score our first World Cup goal having not scored a single one in 1974. Secondly we are looking to get at least a win in the group stages and hopefully that will be today against Japan. Then after that we face the almighty Brazil followed finally by Croatia.

Kickoff today is at 1400 (GMT+1 time).

Go the Socceroos!

Honestly I see Japan winning over Australia and not vice versa.

We'll see. Japan are favourites, but I'm confident of an Aussie victory.

It is just the name given to our national team. The soccer part you obviously know. The 'roos' refers to one of our most well known animals, the humble kangaroo. Roo is Aussie slang or shorthand for a kangaroo. Hope this clarifies for you.

Egyptian and Senegalise officials? This was always bound to involve controversy. Many bad calls, one directly leading to a Japanese goal, and its not even half time.Just our luck to get a whos who of bad officiating.

The referee has been giving penalties at the drop of a hat, and yet when our goalie actually gets properly obstructed - nothing.

Well at least the ref was bad on both sides. Just seconds after he scored the equaliser Cahil gave away what should have been a penalty spot kick.

3-1, coming back from the brink for a 2 goal win, they dominated play all match, the stats showed it, thank god they finally converted to win.

Does anyone know why Hiddink was pushing that Japanese guy? It looked like Guus was about to throw a haymaker.
