<<WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Video showing a plane crashing into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, was released publicly for the first time Tuesday, a judicial watchdog group said.

The Justice Department has handed over tapes showing American Airlines Flight 77 striking the building outside Washington to Judicial Watch, a public interest group that requested the video, the group said.

The video is available on the group's Web site, according to a news release from Judicial Watch.

At least two tapes were released, from different security cameras. The two cameras, from the same Pentagon checkpoint, show the building from different angles. (Watch as the plane slams into the Pentagon -- 3:03)

Previously released still photographs from those cameras show the Pentagon on fire, but no images of the Boeing 757 striking the building have ever been made public.

The video released Tuesday was the source of those still photos.

In one clip, a police car passes in front of the security camera before a ball of flame and smoke erupts from the Pentagon in the background.

"We fought hard to obtain this video because we felt that it was very important to complete the public record with respect to the terrorist attacks of September 11," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

"Finally, we hope that this video will put to rest the conspiracy theories involving American Airlines Flight 77. As always, our prayers remain with all those who suffered as a result of those murderous attacks."

The Pentagon attack killed 184 people: Fifty-three passengers and six crew members on board American Airlines Flight 77, and 125 military and civilian personnel inside the building.

Some conspiracy theorists have maintained the aircraft was shot down in flight, and that the Pentagon was struck by a missile. (Watch fireballs engulf ruined parts of the Pentagon -- 0:55)

Judicial Watch filed a Freedom of Information Act request, but the government refused to release the video until after the trial of Zacarias Moussaoui, the convicted al Qaeda conspirator who was sentenced earlier this month to life in prison.

Sources said in 2002 that the FBI confiscated a hotel security camera video that showed the attack on the Pentagon. It's not known if that tape is being released.

Judicial Watch is "a conservative, non-partisan educational foundation, promotes transparency, accountability and integrity in government, politics and the law," according to its Web site.

The group filed a lawsuit this year, arguing that there was "no legal basis" for the Pentagon's refusal to release the tape.

The video requested by Judicial Watch was taken from security cameras at the Pentagon, the Sheraton National Hotel, the Nexcomm/Citgo gas station, and Virginia Department of Transportation traffic cameras.

Jill Farrell, Judicial Watch's director of media affairs, said she would not know which video will be released "until we see it.">>

Apparenttly this was an effort to debunk some of the conspiracy theories surrounding the Pentagon crash, about which i read extesivelly and actually it was rumoured that an UAV hit the building. The newlly released video doesnt clarify the situation in my oppinion. At no point can you clearlly see the aircraft nor the white streak thats supposedlly is the 757 can be associated with it because it is too small and flying way too low.

Sorry to say after watching the video clip some five times I am still not convinced. A Boeing 757 is big so where is it, in the footage? Surely you would have seen a big blur but no. I have seen all the photos and there is something very odd here. What really hit the Pentagon is any ones guest; I just don't know what to make of it.

Come on, Steed. You've got to have noticed that the video isn't 30 fps. About a minute into the video, you can see a truck driving by. Look how far the truck moves from frame to frame. An aircraft would have been travelling much faster -- fast enough to cross the entire field of view between frames.

I agree with Neal...these videos are taken by still snapshots...not streaming video. You see a blur in both videos right before the fireball.

i'm fairly sure they showed this footage on the national news at the time..better quality too and it was definitely an airliner..at the time i was actually trying to figure out why what had started with 4 airliners being hijacked with constant news up dates had at that point altered to only three..the other suddenly vanished..of course we now know why..but at the time that seemed hugely bizaare in all the confusion..

mind you i still wonder at the chances of two enourmous sky scrapers collapse-ing so perfectly upon their foundations ...has to be said tho it was a miracle that they did as if they had colapsed to either side the would have taken out half a dozen other buildings at the same time..

i dont buy the theory that they were deliberately demolished to save lives...but

I don't think it would be humanly possible for anyone to plan, equip, set up and demo a building in the time between the airliner strikes and the collapse.

Exactly. there is just no way that such a security camera could catch an object travelling at such a speed. It would have had to be extremely lucky. Lets just face it. It is part of the human mind that a portion of the population will believe in conspiracy theories.

Strangely enough when I last undertook my Aviation Security Course here in the UK (which is an industry requirement post 9/11), we were shown video and images of airline jijackings and bombings. Within this package was a clip which showed the explosion at the Pentagon but also in it you could make out the shape of the tailplane (poor quality image), of the 757. For me I don't need any further proof. The event took place. It's as simple as that.

First up everyone I watched the film footage pass midnight UK time and I was tired. Ok we in the office looked at it again and CNN have changed it a little, OK with that to one side they did show even if it was a bit blurred a still shot of the planes fuselage. As I am now more awake and alert case closed I except what happen.

PS I never believed the conspiracy theory in the first place.

i agree absolutely ....but who ever designed those towers should be made a national hero... one falling north the other south both on fire across multiple other buildings would have been a further disaster of un imaginable scale..as if the original event wasn't bad enough..mind any speculation is made difficult by the sheer nightmare of the reality

The towers shouldnt have collapsed in the first place.
