Motorcycle racing's 'most dangerous' event is underway and a rider is already dead

Every spring, the Isle of Man - a tiny island hanging between Ireland and Great Britain - becomes a high-velocity, all-stakes speed zone.

Around 40,000 outsiders cram onto the island annually to watch and participate in what organizers call "the most dangerous race in the world."

The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) is a series of motorcycle races. For two weeks, bikers blitz the public roads looping around the island at speeds approaching 200 mph

I remembered about thirty years ago when I went with a mate, so I sat behind him, on high speed on highway in fast turns ... it's still stuck so motorcycles have never been my thing. Even if I have license for it.

One of my old pub pals used to run the TT for a while. He's a Facebook buddy now and lives on the island farming sheep but still rides big bikes around there

I've been riding bikes since I was 16, currently have a BMW R1100RT, the wife and I go everywhere on it. Winter here now so it goes off the road for 3 months while I service and clean it.
So long as you keep a sharp watch and give way to everything when riding you're generally quite safe, and a decent speed.

That's quite a machine you have as well, Reece. Good choice. Safe travels to you and your wife both.

With regards to the TT race, I have no interest in going that fast. I much prefer my bigger, low slung cruisers to the sport bikes. Ironically, I took a safety course to evaluate and update my driving characteristics and abilities. My Instructor for 2 days was a 64 year old gentleman who drove / rode a 200hp KTM sport bike. It may have been a KTM 1190 RC8 but i'm not sure.



My Instructor wanted me to take a walk on the wild side and drive one of these sport bikes but I said, No thanks.

Ironically, KTM CEO Stefan Pierer has discontinued production and distribution of KTM super sport bikes like the one above. Stefan has said they are too dangerous and have no place on a public street. I completely agree.

Thanks, and I don't blame you with the super bikes, you only have to come off once!!
In my young (stupid) days I went around a sharp corner doing 60+ mph and a car was waiting to turn right, I couldn't move to the right due to oncoming traffic and not enough time to slow down, had a pillion passenger!! We hit the car and thankfully we both went over the top of the car and just got a few bruises, typical I landed on my ass!!! Ouch!! Lesson learned!

It was a nice little Island to visit thirty years ago. Took one of the USN tugs down from the Holy Loch. Felt kind of funny walking around in crackerjacks, sort of like being back in WW2. I think we need a reset.

Btw, my 2008 Suzuki just rolled 67,000 miles. Hunter, how many you got on your Tiger?

You need big nuts to participate in that event, even MotoGP riders like Rossi who once did a lap said it was crazy.

My Tiger is still a Cub when it comes to the milage that's on it , just passed my first official service maintenance milestone on it so you can imagine it's not so much 12-14.000km or so. Problem is that I'm surrounded by Yamahas at work which are easy to grab for a quik spin. Also bought a car as of last year so that's not helping either .

Plan to take my Tiger to the Sahara Desert this year when we Visit Morroco.

I'm thinking about a new bike (in theory) because I have had my Strom for 10 years now. Maybe the Ducati 1100 Scrambler, love those style bikes.
