After playing SH2, SH3, and SH4 for years, I've finally decided to take the plunge and go for SH5 now that there are thoroughly vetted mods that correct the issues.
What I need to know is, which source for SH5 would be best for me to purchase with the intent of implementing the best mods and/or megamods? There is of course Steam, but that's not always the best choice for modding. Sometimes Steam will not like the mods installed. Then there are DVDs, but I have read somewhere, and I can't find it again despite searching for the info (should have bookmarked it), that there is more than one SH5 DVD, some of which have onerous DRM onboard and others that come without the DRM problem. So the question is, Steam or DVD, and if the answer is DVD, which DVD? How do you identify the "good" DRM-free DVDs, and who sells them? Links to known good DVDs would be very helpful. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and mostly play single player due to my crappy Internet connection, if that info is helpful in advising. Thanks guys! ![]() |

DVD is much easier to mod, get that.
http://www.subsim.com/store.html If you search for Silent Hunter 5 from that link you should be able to buy it and also help Subsim out, unfortunately I am not from the US, Canada or UK so I have no idea on how it works, but my info should be correct. |

Hi Oubaas
You cannot use TDW's Generic File Patcher an essential application for SH5 with the Steam download. ![]() With a download you do not own it. ![]() With a DVD you do, it is yours. ![]() Peter

I also recommend the DVD. If you want to help SubSim, just click on the link in my sig. Onkel Neal gets a cut, and at no extra cost to you.

OK, so Steam is out. What about the Amazon downloads, does anybody know if those work for mods? If not, I'll stick with the DVDs and await the UPS truck, LOL!
Thanks for the info, guys! ![]() ![]() |

It's my understanding that Steam is the only download version that has this problem, but I have no direct experience as I'm a luddite who always goes with the disc.
But that's just me.

Thanks for all the info, shipmates! I just picked up SH5 Gold download version on Amazon for five bucks, it's Prime Day.
And as long as I was there, I finally got the u-boat missions for SH4. Now I just have to go through the various sticky threads and see which mods I want to go with for SH4 now that I have 1.5 and for SH5, which I've never even seen before. That will give me SH3 with GWX, SH4 with u-boats and whatever mod, and SH5 with whichever mod I go with after reading up. It's shaping up to be a pretty decent bubblehead summer for me, LOL! Thanks again for the advice! ![]() ![]() |
