Hey everyone! I come here again looking for advice!
In the last year I must have installed Wolves of Steel about 3 times (I haven't played the game unmodded yet), and every time, I really really want to get in to this game. I play lots of complicated games, but somehow I keep failing at grasping this game. Therefore...I hope that people can guide me in the right direction. I've played the four bearings tutorial like 5 times. And after extensive reading I think I know very well how exactly torpedo's work. AoB, gyro angle etc., no problem. Then i start the campaign and skip the tutorial. I accept a mission and go to the area where I have to be...here the problems start. Sometimes, I do suddenly get a bearing on someone! Hurray! I immediately start plotting it, but either my hydrophone man loses the target...OR he suddenly starts reporting on someone else, meaning all my plotting was for nothing. What's your normal approach when starting a mission? How do you make contact (periscope? Hydrophone?), how do you keep following the same target? The four bearings method made it seem so easy, but it seems like traffic on sea is quite busy ^^ Thanks! |

Don't despair. Think of it this way: If you only have a flathead screwdriver, you can only really effectively screw flathead screws. You'll need to add more tools to the toolbox to do any real work. Conning a sub is similar to that. Sometimes you'll use 4-bearing method, others you'll use periscope or deck gun, etc. It all depends on the situation.
I'd advise you to learn how to use the RAOBF wheel next (good tutorials on YouTube), also there is a thread here with a few real good firing methods. Point is, you'll need to learn a few methods in order to deal with all the situations that you'll encounter. Best places to learn them is here and YouTube. ![]() Some of them can go really deep, geometry, trig, or just good plain old map work.

Thanks!
Just the reply I needed! I did the RAOBF tutorial a couple of times and wrote everything down. Then I did it on my own. Then I started mixing methods in the torpedo practice mission where the ship actually moves: 1) Find range with Stadimeter 2) AOB with RAOBF disc 3) Speed with RAOBF disc I put my angle of attack to 90 degrees and set the gyro's to 0 and waited. Hit with all three torpedo's! That feels good! ![]() Thanks a lot! |

My advice would be not to use 4 bearings until you have mastered other attack methods.
When I was learning, I used to focus on making sure I could get ahead on target/s unseen and set for fast 90. When you get good at setting up you ambush position - then try other attacks ![]() |

Glad you met with such great success so quickly! That's awesome. Trevally is right about the 4-bearing method. I usually use the 4-bearing method to get a general course and speed, without using it as a final solution. Three bearings of the 4 bearing method along with a speed estimate based on slow/medium/fast will give you info which can help you with intercept. I then typically use the attack disk, google Angriffsscheibe Handbuch for the download, and use it to get an intercept (it has a ton of uses). Then I use the RAOBF wheel to get my shot info.
When you're in the mood to practice, try these methods. They can help you get targets that you might not be able to get otherwise due to bad position and/or target speed, and require less calculations. Read the whole thread though, you can do it without the math by using the attack disk. I haven't mastered this one yet, not that it's difficult, but just requires practice. Gute Jagd Kaleun!

Its because he is too unreliable, because he depends on morale, skill, etc... I try always to get closer to hear it for myself and then i just write down bearings of that sound from hydrophone (you can use periscope too if he's close enough..) (in Hydrophone, i always get edges of sound to check how wide it is and then i count middle of it) - particularly handy for convoys.. I don't really use it to target torpedos, but just to track target down from distance where you dont even see him. At close range i always try to measure him by periscope. |
