Well hello again Monkey and I have been on our travels yet again this time we were bound for the rather chilly Scandinavian region of the world, more to the point two countries and Three naval museums I will put up some pictures there are more if you follow the link in my signature which leads you directly to my albums where you will find a lot more pictures to view.
Upon our whirlwind adventure we will stop by in Copenhagen Denmark, Karlskrona, and Malmo Sweden. On this trip sadly it didn't quite go according to the plan and we had to alter the plan a bit but it did come with a slight bonus we got one more museum in than planned! Ok so for the first stop at plan A we headed to the naval base at Holmen Copenhagen where three vessels awaiting us trawling all over them, sadly this wasn't the case as i screwed up and miss read the book dates and the ships were all closed but we still got some good exterior shots. ![]() ![]() This is HDMS Peder Skram a former frigate of the Royal Danish navy now housed in Holmen Near the Peder Skram is this HMDS Sehested a fast patrol craft ![]() And the final piece in the trio is the submarine HDMS Saelen She was one of the last submarines to operate with the Royal Danish navy as of today the Danish navy does not operate any submarines. ![]() ![]() Well after the alteration to the plans, we decided to get to Karlskrona which for anyone who hasn't done the journey from Copenhagen overland by train it is a bit of a mission, in fact the round trip is nearly 8 hours ! silly what i do for a submarine isn't it ! After crossing the Oersund bridge and being probed by the police and their nice doggies (no i wasn't carted off in handcuffs either) we made our long journey north east towards Karlskrona. It is a nice town small but nether the less it wasn't as busy as i was expecting and it wasn't a far walk from the station either. So i decided to go into the museum and look around, now Karlskrona is quite famous for one reason a Russian Whiskey class SSK ran aground near the naval base back in the 80's and caused a little bit of a stir not to mention WW3. Inside the museum is the main submarine hall and inside this which by the way is a covered dry dock which you can walk around it is totally enclosed there is two submarines (i only thought there was one). First lets start with the HMSwS Hajen 1 commissioned in 1904 she was based on the holland design lets face it what early submarines weren't ? sadly she proved unreliable and was decommissioned in 1922 she was laid up for 10 years and then stripped of her interior she isn't open to the public so exterior shots only. ![]() ![]() Now besides the Hajin 1 is the more modern submarine of the Nacken class HMS Neptun she is small but effective (i bet your wife says that too) she is completely out of the water so you get a good idea of her size displacing just 860tons when she is on the surface and having a crew of 26 she isn't exactly made for long journeys she was designed to operate only in the Baltic. ![]() Probably the most strangest torpedo tube arrangement i have ever seen ![]() Even Monkey likes to get in on the act. ![]() Now that looks nice i think. Ok well as you guys know the link in my signature and the links on the pictures leads directly to my albums (yes plural there is more than 1) so click on the links to see more pictures. Right now we come to our final day and this time its back to Sweden not quite as far though only 40 minuets and 4 stops later we hit the city of Malmo, to be honest I have seen busier villages in the country side but hey ho who is complaining about that? Malmo is home to the transport museum where they keep things to do with all types of transport aircraft trains cars ships and oddly HMSwS U3 a submarine. Now i know exactly what you guys are going to think when you look at her and that is she is just a copied German type IID u boat, wrong ! even though she was built in 1942 she is in fact she is totally Swedish designed and built ![]() ![]() So you know what your looking at in the last picture here that is infact the control room ! yes it is tiny Monkey had trouble getting through too! Sadly that brings me to the end of my mini adventure stay tuned though as a new one is only 9 day away from today!!!! Hope you guys enjoyed the tours sorry i cannot upload every picture i have to subsim i think uncle neal would fire me out of the torpedo tube if i did so please feel free to browse and comment on the flickr page and remember i try and update as much as possible.
