Icon12 Whiskey Tango Foxtrot/Taliban Shuffle

Taliban Shuffle
I read the book, and just saw the film. Not bad, it's pretty interesting. The book does a great job of explaining the convoluted social and political dynamics of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and a little of the history (spoiler: it's all the British's fault).

Interesting fact: Afghans are massively inbred, it seems they prize cousins marrying each other greatly. This probably explains a lot.

Muslims do not like dogs, they consider them evil/unclean. The author found herself frequently being called a "dog washer" as an insult.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
The movie is equally as good, expect it to be more entertaining and less educational. It starts off excellently, tries to squeeze in a rom-com, but still pulls off a good movie. It has a really terrific Marine raid on a Taliban stronghold, enjoyed that part. Not enough drone strikes but still, I give it 4 of 5 donkeys.

We only went in to keep the Russkies out of India. Took us three goes to get it right, and we wound up resorting to drones too. Well, aircraft.

I thought Jim was up to no good.

They do not truly understand what man's best friend is. Then again, it might have to do with the inbreeding.

Wonder what they think of donkeys.

They probably would have had about the same amount of success as us, although when the 1917 revolution came about it would have been very interesting to see how that would have affected India. Could have had the Russian Raj as the only surviving outpost of the Russian Empire.

For Afghan dogs the US/UK invasion was probably the best thing to happen. These chaps have done a lot for the dogs of Afghanistan

Pen Farthing helped start it all up, he's written a couple of books about his time in Afghanistan and how he came to set up Nowzad.

One thing I noticed with Bosnian co-workers, that the older bunch (let's call them the pre-war generation), viewed Slovene love of dogs with a negative curiosity. Absolutely baffled by the Slovene tradition of giving parts of our lunch to the 3 dogs that frequented the boat yard.
The younger ones (war generation), are a 180°. They picked up the western love of dogs.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is on my list of movies to watch. Seen a few trailers and can't really decide if it's an out and out comedy or not.

@Oberon....I wonder if the Russians would have fared any better in India than they did in Afghanistan?

Wouldn't Whiskey Tango Foxtrot be considered an attempt to mask a swear by forum standards?
