If one cannot afford a donation (I know $5.00 is quite the small amount, really, and really, that's how shockingly close I cut it sometimes when the bills are paid) but sometimes, some people really can't afford even that much.

So because of this, I can't download SH3 Commander? I guess I missed a whole lot because I've never heard of bonus mods before. I guess I'm sorry to see the site fall on such hard times.

This isn't to say that these mod creators and this website doesn't deserve to earn money, no, quite the opposite, the amount of time and man hours spent would cost a whole lot more if we started looking at real world equivalents.

I'm just wondering if there's a "I'm really a poor guy at the moment, sorry" button or a SH3 Non-Donators-Missing-Features version or something. Not trying to generate sympathy, I'm just stating that I can't afford to donate, and I'd like to know my options, even if the only one does turn out to be "Budget for next month better, kid."

If you haven't posted in a while that could be the problem.

From the FAQ & Rules page.

If you have received a message Sorry! You have exceeded your daily allowed download amount it is because one of these things:
1. You're a new member and you've never posted. New members with 0 posts may be limited to 3 downloads a day. Solution: make a post somewhere in the forum, such an introductory post in the Comments to SUBSIM section. After an hour or less the forum will automatically enable downloads.

2. You have been a member a long time, and you've never posted or have not posted in a long time. Solution: make a post somewhere in the forum. This post will be placed in the moderation que, and after 24 hours or less the forum will automatically enable downloads for you again. We have to do this to prevent spammers from joining, waiting a few months and then bombarding the forum with ads for Vie-gra, etc.

3. You have hit download limit for the day. We have a limit because with hundreds of members downloading every day, it can get pretty expensive for us.

I think you misunderstood where the donation money goes. All the money is used to help pay the costs to run the server for the site, no one is paid for anything. The bonus mods are mods the developers have agreed to allow Neal to use to raise money with by releasing them early to contributors, before they are released openly several weeks later. I hope this clears up any confusion you might have had.
