Went for a short stroll on the coast this morning. This area is about a twenty minute drive from home and is quite nice although I miss the wild and woolly days when the area first became public after the military left in around 1974. Then you almost had the place to yourself and all the people containing upgrades were non-existent. You could even build fires on the beach which is unheard of now.
There are coastal defense installations dating back to the civil war here but these I'm showing were built in 1940. ![]() ![]() Two of several large gun emplacements. ![]() Random observation posts and pill boxes are all over the place. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The large guns were 16".

Those must be some of the last WW2 era barracks still standing in the country.

These batteries and installations are in the Marin Headlands and there are a few generations of construction.
Those barracks are all restored and in use as are much of the other wood buildings in the area. One of the Nike missile batteries is preserved while the other is converted into the Marine Mammal Center. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marin_Headlands It's a lot of fun there. ![]() ![]()

Not really; The Presidio is immediately to the South of the Golden Gate and also has all the old buildings still; A lot of motion picture work goes on there- My work occasionally-and reenactors(me) still garrison Old Fort Point under the Bridge for the National Parks. It was completed in 1860 and I recently witnessed the USS Iowa under tow, sprayed by fireboats, to its new berth in Southern CA from the forts' top parapet; after touring the Pampanito Baleo class sub and Jerimiah O'Brien Liberty Ship at Fisherman's Wharf. The range on the guns from the bunkers was 20+miles...all melted down.

Somebodies band I just found that and had a good laugh.
I have fun there and have been since it opened to the public. I find it to be a national treasure along with all the other early military installations in the area. Mare Island was the first U.S. Navy Yard on the west coast for a good reason. The park is free and has miles of pleasant hiking with incredible shoreline cliffs and a long history still very evident. The weather is also quite good and today was T-shirt weather if you were moving.

I went to the Presidio a couple of times, as a child, with my father; he was in the merchant marines, but had served briefly in the Army (it was found his sea legs were not compatible with Army drill and, besides, his skills were more needed to man the merchant ships) and he went to a military hospital on the base for medical care a couple of times. Later, in high school, I was in the Jr. ROTC and went to the Presidio for various Army related functions. It was there, if memory recalls well, I was able to try out an Airborne practice jump tower that had been set up as part of a ceremony and parade in which I partcicpated. Some of the buildings actually date back to the days of Spanish and Mexican rule of California. When the base was closed down, real estate developers were literally drooling over the possibility of acquiring the land to put up high-end condos and estates. But the citizens of San Francisco, who are known to fiercely defend their history and landmarks, raised a ruckus and the plans of the developers were foiled. It is one of the most beautiful places in the city and on the West Coast. I envy you your ability to easily access the area...
