Help a newcomer (me) enjoy the world of Submarine (and mainly SUBSIM)

Greetings good people of SUBSIM

The name's Viko, i'm 16 and pretty much interested in naval/submarine warfare. Started this thread here just to greet the whole resident of SUBSIM, and perhaps to knew people more here. (moderators/admins may move this thread if it's misplaced)

So let's jump in to the main thing, i've been pretty much interested into (mainly) vehicular warfare/military since i was a kid and for various reason, it's submarines and aircrafts that reigns as no.1 on my mind.
I actually learned about those things and pretty much understand about it, and being a teen boy it's usual to know these from video-game simulators. There's plenty of Flightsim out there, and my journey for learning submarines through simulator brought me here.

And that's quite the intro, here's the main thing.
As you can see, i'm looking for the best simulation/knowledge about submarines that i can get, a good friend of mine hooked me into the 5th Silent Hunter.

I'm actually aware that they said the game isn't that good, but to wander freely in the submarine is what makes this game the first choice. So, i played it, and i liked it. Installed 2 to 3 graphic mods (mostly to increase performance because inside the submarine the fps just crash-dive and is barely playable, plus slightly annoying) to enhance realism, because well the explosion looks goofy on the vanilla game.

Here's list of stuff i'm looking for, by the way:
  1. Silent Hunter games and user-picked (subsim games and) mods,
  2. Modern Submarine and Warships simulator,
  3. Midway Battlestation game,
  4. Submarine movies,
  5. Factual books about submarines

I'm planning to get the 4th one because i guess it was better, and what you, a helping member of SUBSIM, can guide me (on finding stuff like simulators that has connection on submarines) so i can, let's say further my studies... I'm also looking for Submarine movies like well, Das Boot, Hunt for Red October, etc, you name it.

So that's all for now! I'm really looking forward on what SUBSIM and the people of it can offer me, and what i can find and contribute on this wonderful website (no joke, so far this is the liveliest forums i've seen).

So, cheers!

Greetings Vikocho.
Welcome to the boat.
Grab an oar and put your back into it.

I must say, your introduction was extremely ... long winded.

Great! Skybird junior.

If you really want the best sub simulation, Silent Hunter IV gold with the TMO mod is the way to go. I would provide links but, what would you learn from that other than how to be lazy?

Welcome aboard, Vikocho!

For more information on Silent Hunter 5, see here.

SH4 is also very good. It just has a different way of looking at things. This is also true of SH3, which still offers the widest variety of gameplay.

Subim is a great community, however, the best way to enjoy subsim, is to avoid General Topics.

If your getting into a silent hunter game, I would suggest sticking to those forums, be it SH3, SH4, or SH5, or even SH Online. Aside from that, General Games Discussion is a good forum . In General Topics, (aka "GT" for short), it's mainly just old forum curmudgeons beating each other upside the head with politics and the like. Personally, I enjoyed subsim a lot more before i got involved in GT. In my opinion, GT is somewhere you go after you've burned yourself out on submarine sims and are still hanging out for some reason. So go explore the rest of the forums and enjoy yourself. You've plenty of time before you end up "rubbernecking" here in GT.

Watch out for that Ducimus fellow.
He's such an optimist.

Welcome aboard VikochoFor SH V start with Fifi's mod list; more movies: take a look at Run Silent Run Deep(Clark Gable) to improve your down-the-throat shooting technique; The Enemy Below (Kurt Jurgens) for stealth and evasion insight; and my personal favorite: Action in the North Atlantic (Humphrey Bogart)to get the Gruppetaktic and merchantman perspective down pat!

Welcome aboard. My advice is get out while you are young and still can. Get into the real world and enjoy your life a bit before diving into the depths of subsim. This way madness lies.

Just kidding. Hope you enjoy your time in the madhouse that is subsim.

Welcome aboard Vikocho!
You need to drop Wolferz's oar and scrape and paint the conning tower. Then when you're through, you can scrape the barnacles off the hull. After that you clean the crud out of the bilge. Then you can take a break and help Wolferz with his oar.
