Newbie question...

Ahoy fine seamen!

What mods are 'essential' for SH4?
I am aware of the fact that there is nothing
like GWX for SH4.

Still there must be some heavyweight mods
around for SH4 - or am I wrong?

/Yoshi

I use TMO (Trigger Maru Overhauled), RSRDC (Run Silent Run Deep Campaign), Max Optics, and a few other smaller mods.
Many people also use OTC (Optical Targeting Correction)

Trigger Maru Overhauled, Run Silent Run Deep Campaign, Traveller's Mod, and Authentic Flags are good ones.

I also run Improved Stock Environment, Less Plankton, and the donation Narwhal mod.

Happy hunting!

I know that I'm asking much - but do you happen have the links?
I'm a donor - so that's' not the prob.
I just have difficulty to find said mods.

Thank you very much!

Check the Subsim Downloads section.

It's all there and you don't need to be a donor to get the files.

That's good. You need 1.5 for most of the mods out there. You just need some time in the SH4 mod forums and the Subsim Download section.

Happy Hunting!

Ahoy all you fine seamen and experts!

I am more than a little bit embarrassed to ask for more
advice...

Still - it seems that I can't get any mod working.

I would be grateful for some help.

Here is what I did:

1. Install Silent Hunter 4 from DVD

2. It's located now in C: Program Files (x86)\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\...

3. I installed the U-Boat missions expansion for SH4 from DVD to the same
folder. SH4 is now updated to V. 1.5.

4. I ran the program and it works - although I always wondered why
there are no quick missions when you switch sides to german.

5. I downloaded and unzipped:
- TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5
- RSRDC_TMO_V502
- RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1

6. I created a sub-folder named MODS under C: Program Files (x86)\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\...

7. I copied TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5 into the MODS
folder to start with.

8. I copied JSGME.exe from my SH3 folder to C: Program Files (x86)\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\...

9. I ran JSGME and activated TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5.

10. JSGME doesn't complain and says that TMO is now activated.

11. I run the game and...nothing has changed, or I am too dumb
to realize it. Is there at least one tell tale sign that TMO
is properly activated?

12. I tried also to:

- Only install:
- RSRDC_TMO_V502
- RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1

and install 'over' TMO:

- RSRDC_TMO_V502
- RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1

Nothing happens, JSGME doesn't complain and the game
runs as if there were no mods at all...

Can somebody Please help???

There's your mistake, although I wouldn't expect you to know this. I guess we overlooked telling you this little bit of important information. I'll apologize on behalf of all.

For the mods to work, sh4 needs to be in its own directory. For example:
C: Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\...

I don't know why, but it's something with the "Program Files (x86)" directory that keeps the program from recognizing the mods. Someone who is computer savvy may be able to tell us why.

I mentioned in another thread that a computer expert friend told me that Windows 7 and 8 don't like anything non-Windows related in Program Files. They made it that way on purpose.

Thanks a lot guys!

So - I did the complete installation from scratch with
a different target drive (I:\).
Played the game in its 'virgin' state for a while to make sure
I'll recognize the differences later on...

Then I activated 'TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5' via JSGME.
Unfortunately with no results.

(I take it that if there is no Narwhal - then something
has gone wrong with the enabling of the mod)

The game looks and plays the same whether TMO is
activated or not.

As a last resort, I copied the whole TMO /data folder
into the games /data folder, thereby merging and
overwriting the original files.

Result: SH4 crashes after opening scene.

Sorry for all this - I'm sure it's a stupid mistake
as I started using mods (in SH3) only 2 weeks ago...

If somebody has any idea as to what to try
next - your advice will be more than welcome!
