Iran: US ScanEagle drone 'captured over Gulf'

The Iranian military says it has captured an unmanned US drone aircraft in its airspace over Gulf waters.

The Revolutionary Guards said they had brought down a ScanEagle - one of the smaller, less sophisticated drones employed by the Americans.

Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi told the Fars news agency that the drone had conducted several reconnaissance flights over the Gulf in recent days.

The US said it was looking into the reports.

The ScanEagle drone, which has a has a 10ft (3m) wingspan, is a low-cost, long-endurance aircraft built by Insitu, a subsidiary of Boeing.

Rear Adm Fadavi said that "such drones are usually launched from large warships".

Fars news agency reported, without giving details.

Fars said the drone was captured "in the last few days". It is not clear how it was captured.

TEHRAN, Iran — A U.S. Navy spokesman says no American drones are missing in the Middle East following Iranian claims it had captured an unmanned American surveillance aircraft. Cmdr. Jason Salata, a spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, says all U.S. drones in the region are "fully accounted for." He also cast doubt on Iranian claims Tuesday that the U.S. ScanEagle drone entered Iranian airspace, saying U.S. operations in the Persian Gulf are "confined to internationally recognized water and airspace."
He says that U.S. ScanEagles have been lost into the sea in the past, but none have gone down recently.

Other nations in the Gulf, including the United Arab Emirates, have ScanEagle drones in service.
The 5th Fleet is based in Bahrain.

Bright future ahead! Drones will spread drastically in the near future. Build by components from a dozen different countries or more, with Chips for the most all delivered by China, nobody is enforced to mark his ID and ownership on any of his drone. Result?

Everybody can strike everybody else at any time - but hiding his responsibility and leaving the other unknown of the attacker's ID. You can strike and will not be held accountable for it. However, there is a chance that you - and anyone else - gets targetted by another of right these arbitrary strikes.

A very real and very major concern threatening to completely redefine the rules of war - and diplomacy alike.

A more safe and peaceful world is the last thing that will come from this.
