One of the problems is that the sound you hear in movies is usually the sound an active sonar unit makes when it sends the signal, not what is heard from the submarine. Former u-boatmen usually describe what they heard as "gravel bouncing off the hull", which doesn't seem to me to be a 'ping' at all. There are several different sonar sound mods out there. Most of them were made for SH3, but since both games us .wav files for the non-speech sounds any of them should work with SH5 with no problems.

Here is one a quick search turned up.

And another.

You might also try downloading some of the other big sound mods. Some of them have different sonar sounds which you can easily grab and install by hand.

You could have a look at this mod : http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=164165

A working download link can be found in post #6

I got inspired by the above descriptions for creating this sonar ping, achieved by editing and merging together several different sounds (not yet ready for use in SH5).

Some other interesting ping fx here:

a "metallic" sound with a lot of reverbe
another vintage sonar fx
the classic ping heard in many movies

If you like any of them I could edit and save them in the correct format for being used in game.

Hi Gap!

It's nice one..
What do I need to edit to get it ready to use in the game?

You should convert it to "16 bit, 48 kHz, mono" uncompressed wav format. But don't you guys think that it is a bit too metallic? I could try to reduce the "hammer hitting the hull" effect and enhance the "gravel hailstorm" factor instead

I think it gets quite close to the description of the real sound, as heard inside subs.
