I just read that on the BBC and was about to post but you beat me to it.

I think it's a great idea to get people to upgrade their browser, and I notice he doesn't promote a link to any version of IE. I that man.

I'd go with the competitor who doesn't engage in such silliness.

That depends on what they sell.

Surely a couple of clicks and 60 seconds later it's updated and working without the 'tax' is better than finding a competitor, finding the product, registering on the site, buying product. You'll get your product, and a more secure browser on your PC.

"It appears you or your system administrator has been in a coma for over 5 years"

Supporting an outdated browser which ignores many standards provides extra work for the site owner, so it's legitimate to pass the bill to the customer. Same as a car wash charges more for a semi or a van.

Seems to be the reason they are doing it is because they have to go through a load of extra effort to make their site work fine on IE. Make sense to me.

You mean, Firefox or Chrome, don't you??

Mr Kogan said it was unlikely that anyone would actually pay the charges. His goal is to encourage users to download a more up-to-date version of Internet Explorer or a different browser.
Just a humorous version of saying "IE7 too old and buggy to be used in our site, sorry".

IE 6/7 and Firefox <= 4 is causing major headaches for web developers everywhere

Please upgrade to something modern (IE9, latest firefox/chrome, or my personal favorite, Konqueror)

Unfortunately, the main reason ancient browsers are used is because many enterprises once hired a group of consultants 10 years ago to write an internal application. The same application was never updated, and it won't work with a new browser, and so ancient browsers still get used in large companies.

About time someone did something like that, IE 7 is a terrible browser and using it should be made expensive and/or painful, more so than it already is.

My older system won't run IE9, but I use 8. It's newer and it's free, so why use the older one anyway? I can understand them wanting to disown it, but charging? Well, I don't have to worry about it anyway.

its not like they sneak in those extra charges. A giant, obstructive sign tells you that either you use a different or more recent browser or you get taxed. There are other websites to choose from, many more, and if you want to use the site, you play by their rules. its no different from subsim. you could say that the language rules are a poor excuse to censor people, but ultimately it doesnt matter because you are on this site, using it, so you play by their rules or you get no service.

its not a monopoly where the only option is to buy from them, and/or not have the ability to get a new browser, and are being forced to do any online shopping with taxes. my guess is they wouldnt be profiting at all from this venture, because people have other options, like switching browsers or shopping elsewhere.

Ehh, I would but the latest Firefox releases are absolutely horrid in regards to UI, even when getting it as close as you can to the earlier versions its still an absolute eyesore.
