Default Deadwood-TV Series-2004-2006

I have an opportunity to pick up a boxed set of this series, which includes all 3 seasons.
imdb gives it a very high rating and it seems to be something i would enjoy watching.
However, i'm looking for recommendations, or otherwise of this from members who have seen it (all 3 series).
I understand that the series DOES NOT have an ending because the producers (HBO) had originally announced a 4th season but cancelled this.
A series with no ending? Dam!

I preferred Rome. A two-year series, but with an ending that wrapped things up while holding out the possibility of more.

Deadwood was one of those shows with a targeted audience. I have not met too many people, who watched it, that were neutral about the show. Those that like modern portrayal westerns loved it. If that type of show is not your cup of red-eye, you probably won't like it.

I watched a little bit of season 2 and it was not for me. But many many others loved the series.

As for not having an ending. Now you know how Firefly fans felt until the move came out. Maybe there will be a Deadwood movie to wrap up the story lines.

What i'm curious about is how much of an opening does it leave in the last episode?
Some movies or series leave an 'open' ending, so that you know a sequel is on the cards.
Others just kind of peter out and leave it to your imagination to come up with an ending.
Is this a blunt "there's more on the way after this episode"?
I'm trying to figure out wether it's even worth purchasing because of this no ending.
What's the point?
In that respect i'm pretty simple when it comes to films, i need closure, of sorts.

I loved Deadwood

It was bloody, violent, pervetly sexual, politically incorect, had no happy endings, had no positive message, no true heroes, no stereotipycall villains... it was the wild west

Well, I've seen the entire series, and I highly recommend it. However,
the ending is not just 'open'; the show really has no end. Like you said, it was cancelled but the writers at the time thougth there would be another season. That's really a shame; there is no closure whatsoever, but I still recommend you watching it. At least now you know beforehand there is no real end.. And it would be a shame if you didn't watch it just because there's no actual final episode. You'd miss out on a lot of fun. And you would miss out on one of the greatest 'bad guys' ever to be seen in a series

Interesting you say that. I was a big fan of Deadwood but I always felt the second season was quite weak in places to the extent I didn't watch the third season for a long time afterwards.

Rome was wonderful. It was my understanding, though, that the decision to not make a third season was taken after a large part of the set burned down therefore rendering a very expensive show even more costly. I know there were plans for a movie too but it seems to have gone very quiet on that front. Oz was brilliant for the first season or two but last time I saw the show there didn't seem to be anything more to it than endless prison rapes.

Could have been my usual luck in jumping in during a bad part of a bad season.

That in itself is a problem with a lot of modern shows. They are meant to tell a broader story, and jumping in anywhere can sometimes leave you wondering just what's going on.
