Default Dover or the long way?

Noob strategy question here, when assigned to patrol SW of England, do you most of you cut through the Straights of Dover or go the long way around the north? I just got my keister handed to me trying to sneak through the straights. Is there a trick to it, or do I need to be patient and take the long way around?

Thanks in advance! I rarely post but have recieved MUCH help already from these forums and would still be in the docks without them

Since there's no working minefields, Dover all the way! Usually. During Total Germany I used that place constantly since there was usually only a pair of destroyers going back and forth and they were real easy to avoid.

Sail near the French coast in the channel. Near Dover you might need to dive and sit quiet / dead slow silent running and watch the destroyer/s before surfacing and continuing.

Try to time your run to happen at night. Drive in hard and fast on the surface but keep your captain below decks. as soon as your crew spots anything, slow down and dive. Slowing down means a lot to your visibility as it lessens the bow wave.
Good luck!

hey useful advice for me too, thanks!

So far I've been motoring around the top of Scotland, as the time compression means I don't personally have to sit through it, and I seem to run out of torpedoes before the fuel.

I am just on my way through it (1939). Lot's of destroyers and aircraft, you have to be careful. But it's possible...I submerge during day, silent running, and full speed ahead during night to make as much mileage as possible.

Yeah, that did the trick, I think I just had bad luck the first time.
