Default I have just one question...

How in the hell did this guy get on the airplane in new york??

Quote:
CAIRO — Airport officials in Cairo say police have detained an American-Egyptian man who arrived on a flight from New York with several weapons in his luggage.
The officials say the man was taken into custody as he tried to pass through customs with a metal box containing two 9 mm handguns, 250 bullets, several swords, daggers and knives.

Not in New York. Not anywhere in the US. I even had my shampoo confiscated because the bottle was too big. Today's luggage is scanned and panned, x-rayed and turned inside-out.

The question is a good one.

They were in his checked bags (the ones stored in the cargo compartment of the aircraft inaccessible to the passengers). You are allowed to bring weapons on an aircraft if they are in your checked bags and declared to customs. The stink over this is that he did not declare them to Egyptian customs.

Im almost 100% sure that this story is omitting precious details - like they all tend to do.

in CHECKED luggage... the luggage that goes into the inaccessible cargo compartment of the aircraft, you CAN carry pistols, swords, daggers, rifles etc in your CHECKED luggage.

IF this is the case, the man has done nothing wrong in my opinion.

However, if in fact they are talking about his carry on bag, i would say that unless he has managed to sneak into the secured side of the airport somehow; it would be next to impossible for him to get these items through even the most half witted security check point.

In my travels within the airline industry i have had the bone heads at the TSA throw away my chicken noodle soup - as i stood in the security line - IN FULL UNIFORM as if i were going to use it for some illegal or questionable purpose.

the TSA agent said "I'm going to have to throw this away"

I said "Why exactly do you have to throw my lunch away?"

He said "Its considered to be a liquid or gel in a container that is larger than 3 ounces."

I replied "What? You realize that im flying the plane right?"

(everyone within ear shot chuckled)

he says "I'm sorry but thats our policy" and chunks it into the trash

the policy changed for uniformed crew within a matter of days.

Im just glad he didnt know about my deodorant, my soap, my shaving cream, my tooth paste and all the other stuff you should be able to travel with without hassle

with such an idiocracy in mind... im starting to think he could have walked through security explaining "its ok, im a ninja"

EDIT:

TLAM Strike beat me to it... if your going to some of these countries you better declare everything you can think of.

I would think in general it would be a bad idea to bring a bag full of weapons into any foriegen country... declared or not.

Reminds me of a story I heard once. A soldier was returning from Afghanistan on emergency leave and changes planes from a USAF transport to a Civilian passenger plane at a civil airport. The bomb sniffer goes off and the TSA hauls him away for hours of questioning. The soldier was still in his BDUs with papers saying where he was coming from, the sniffer went off because of the gunpowder on his clothing from when he was firing his weapon.

Common sense is not a prerequisite of working at the TSA...

I have a friend who lost a leg many years ago. Every time he goes through security the metal prosthetic sets off all the alarms. Not so bad, but just seeing the leg isn't enough. He has to go in a little room, take off all his clothes, take off the leg and be wanded naked. Lots of fun.
