Default Too much luck on vanilla?

Is it just the game or do I need to sell lotto tickets? I'm running the standard 1.4 on normal, running 45% realism (limited fuel, CO2, O2, batts; no duds, auto TDC,no event cam), I just keep coming up to some very juicy targets.

For instance, My fist patrol out I come across a convoy with three heavy cruisers at night, chasing them off the island Manila. Sank them and a few DD's, run'oft happy with my success, then stumble onto a battleship task force the NEXT MOURNING! Give chase, radio Subcompac, who then orders me to sink as many battleships as I can. Okay. Roger that . Go back to port at Manila, refit and continue on with my mission of dropping supplies.

Next patrol on the 23, December, 1941. Encounter the same type of troop transport convoy with the three heavy cruisers, rinse, repeat, celebrate with the crew from the captain's medicine cabinet, and yet again, I run into the SAME battleship task-force. But I'm out of torps this time around, and Manila has been captured. Okay, I duck and dodge my way to Java and put to port.

Now this patrol I'm on. I sank four cargo ships on the way into the China Sea without difficulties. Cool. But just as I enter into open waters (finally) my sonar contact screams heavy warship contacts off the port bow at 2210 hrs. I trace the contacts out with spy key (F11--yeah, I know, I cheat, but working on getting my bearings while having fun at it) and holly lord it is the mother-load: Shokaku carrier, Hiryu carrier, Fuso battleship, a Ise Battleship, and the prize I envy, the Yamato as the flag ship.

My luck just can't be this good....

The stock game dramatically exaggerates the amount of traffic as far as I know. It does seem more than a bit ridiculous when a task force of three Yamatos and a couple of heavy cruisers just springs up from out of the blue!

If you want to try an accurate representation of the Pacific naval traffic, you might take a look at the RSRD campaign mod. It has been carefully researched and is more realistic.

On the other hand, who's going to complain when you're getting all that sailing across your periscope view?!

ps, I'll take a lotto ticket too, just in case there's more than the stock campaign files working in your favour!

Well, after getting the 1.5 update, and running the RSRD mod, I have successfully become not as successful. From Dec. 9 to Dec. 28, leaving Malina to my patrol zone 50km from...Maline, I sank only three ships: a small tanker (1557 tons), a light cruiser among a troop convoy in the South China Sea, and a DD on my way to Java (idiot just stopped dead in the water after several fishes running deep and exploding on the reef).

Ran with duds and realistic reloads (should keep me from running my fishes dry too early). Now I'm going to go for the RFB mod soon, after I get better bearings.

But i still find it a little hard to swallow with all the shipping convoy traffic reports I received, plus the cruisers that escort the one I came across. My history points out different than what I am seeing. Or was it that there were too few of us to put a dent in the Japanese Imperial War Machine and just let the stuff cruise by our periscopes?

Once you become familiar with all the workings of the game, I would suggest trying the TMO1.9 mod. Or maybe that would be too much of a chalenge
