SH4 damage model

How does SH4's damage model work? Twice my Porpoise sub has been damaged: once when I hit bottom and another when a plane fired while surfaced. Both times I put men into the repair section and they were dutifully fixing the control room, including one dude who was standing on top of where the guy steers and part of his body went through the top of the control room (is this fixed in a mod/patch?). However, when I hit 'Y' to check status I could find nothing damaged (even though there was a burst pipe) each time. Hull damage was 0.

The graphics are just that graphics and have no relationship to the damage model. They are there to remind you that you have taken damage or have advocated Damage Control or Battle Stations.

I find it advantages to avoid planes and running aground, than these annoying
things don't pop up.

I believe TMO addresses the steam pipe thing, it goes away much sooner.
As for the other I've never seen that so I don't really know what may fix it.
I've never played a Porpoise, always start the war with a Narwhal. Like the two deck guns.
