Default BBC and other ????

My type VII has a box on the front of the bridge to the port side of the UZO. It has written on it BBC.

Was this a TV installed by the British Broadcasting Corporation?

What is it?
What does BBC stand for?

Also in the controle room there is a vertical shaft with a universal joint near the top. It is to the SB side of the observation perriscope. Anyone know what this is?

In the controle room I can see the 2 dive plane operators and a sailor stood up who I think is in charge of blowing the air/water tanks. Where is the "ships wheel" for chainging the heading of the U-boat? who turns the wheel to set the heading?

Default

BBC stands for Brown, Boveri & Cie, a Swiss electrical engineering group that made a lot of components for the U-Boats.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown,_Boveri_&_Cie

There were three steering stations. One in the control room used when submerged, one in the conning tower where the helmsman would take his orders from the captain on the bridge, and one on the bridge itself which was used mainly when docking or leaving port. The ship's helm was operated by push-buttons, not a wheel.
