Thats a bad idea. I still buy CD's since all compression formats (Save FLAC or highly re-written engine near-lossless OGG's that are rare) are of terrible quality. I am listening to a CD I just bought as I type this. I don't know what it is with people lately. Seems to be that they can't tell the difference between crappy quality and OK quality either these days. CD is not a great format, but to go all compressed formats is a really really bad idea. -S |

The problem is, if you buy one of these files, keep it on your hard drive, and your hard drive dies... you just lost your music. Of course you should back it up, but even home produced CDr's don't last anywhere near as long as a professionally made CD.

Pretty much agree with much of what has been said here. I continue to buy CD's and have a large collection. I will continue to buy compact discs until a better format succeeds it.

I stopped buying cd's years ago, not worth the trouble buying and getting not real red book cd's which wouldn't play in my stereo etc... To the hell with it, on the other hand there is a resurgence of vinyl, and between sacd and vinyl I prefer vinyl. Yestarday I was in big music store and they had a gigantic poster reading "2008 - Vinyl is back" !!! ![]() It just amazes me that vinyl's comeback is kicking sacd ass. |

I do find it humorous that vinyl is starting to reappear again though. ![]() ![]() ![]() -S Last edited by SUBMAN1; 01-01-09 at 02:22 PM. |

I don't own a portable MP3 player of any sort, so I'll be using CDs for the forseeable future. Also, I would agree with August that I prefer to have something tangible when it comes to my music collection.
For the record, vinyl is tops. Bring back analog. |

I love vinyl, there is something almost sacred about carefully putting the record on the player and positioning the needle.
As an old dj I use one of these: ![]()

I agree mostly.
I just listened to an MP3 I purchased from Amazon it was pure crap compared to even CD.. It is beyond stupid about how we cant get past Mp3 when it comes to audio. But I guess because the decode chip is just a few cents these days and uses so little power that they just can't fight 5 dollar Mp3 players. There is nothing wrong with compressed audio if it is done right however, but Mp3 is not done right. It was designed to run through primitive equipment to provide audio for rather poor bitrate video. It cares little about the little parts that good speakers can replicate. As for OGG. It is dead. There is supposedly a new version made by fans that is supposedly 2x as good at compressing while maintain the little things but the whole group seems to be dead. Right now Speex is used more than ogg. |
