Well they've sold just about everything else that was state owned so I suppose this was just a matter of time.

I'm honestly not suprised

I wouldn't know much about British defense issues, but on the surface it seems like they may have made a smart move. That's assuming that this method cuts costs somehow.

The U.S. is a staunch ally of Britian, and from what little information I have ever obtained on U.S. deterrant policy, our nukes are yours. The whole tea-taxing and capitol-burning thing is behind us now. We have proven ourselves perfectly capable of taxing the hell out of ourselves, and we may, in fact, need Britain's capitol-burning expertise in the near future. We steadfastly promise to continue development, production and distribution of nuclear weapons as inefficiently as the United Kingdom ever did.

We have also proven our commitment to our neighbors,as FDR put it; If your neighbors are fighting, would you not give the one that used to be your landlord a bat?
Great Britain, and Europe as a whole, need not fear any communist Russian agression so long as there is a Fascist Central European state. We honored our promise to liberate Eastern Europe into the hands of the Soviets for half a century, and we will do so again.

But really, though, we're not going to screw you over (intentionally)

That's not the point. The point is that even IF the UK used an American designed warhead, which I'm not sure we did the UK government had full control over the facility that produced the weapons. Now there is no UK control the thing has been spun off. So regardless whether the USA is a great ally or not we have a foreign power locked right into and controlling a major part of our defense system.

Can you imagine the US government for one privatising its warhead making facility/organisation (I'm making an assumption that it is state controlled and owned) and secondly letting foreign companies no matter whether these companies were from a country that is a great ally own the facility/organisation.

THE UK deterence is supposed to be independent, ie we can nuke who we want when we want if we needed without interference (one reason the French made their own), now we don't have this.
