I already wrote about my misfortune during the Norvay invasion, how I came home without sinking any ship.
New career, another attempt. ![]() Night 13/14 April, 1940. The Sonar guy reported contact, warships heading WSW. I intercepted them, and I realized it was a large task force speeding at 20 kt. In the middle was the Illustrious class carrier ![]() As I approached, two escorts coming directly towards my boat forced me to dive and increase the distance from target. When they passed, the carrier was almost out of the reach 7-8km away, 80 degrees AOB. It was my only chance and I fired 4 torpedoes. As I dived, I cheated a bit and used an external camera to see the impacts ![]() There were no impacts. THe torpedo wakes were spotted (in the middle of the night!), carrier zigzaged and all the torpedoes wasted for nothing. My bad luck continued... April 14 1940 09:39. A radio message from BdU arrived, reporting task force going WSW at 20kts. I plotted an intercept course. A few hours later I spoted the task force - HMS Revenge, escorted by 9 destroyers ![]() They were sailing close together, allowing me to come very close. I fired 4 eels from 2.5-3 kilometars, thinking how all this is for nothing because they will again spot my eels and evade them. They didn't! ![]() ![]() Now I had 9 escorts around me, pinging and dropping cans. Miraculously, I managed to escape undamaged. As I were slowly moving away, I could still hear them killing fish in the distance ![]() Torpedo impacts! ![]() going down ![]() ![]() The afterparty ![]() The dark spot in upper left corner is all what was left from HMS Revenge ![]() ![]()
