Default Quick Newbie Question

Mutual tonnage, good or bad to sink? I read it negatively effects your renown... I really hope that is not true or I have a whole lot of Norwegians to apologize to....

-Thanks.

In GWX 2.1, sinking neutral ships does give you a renown penalty but not that much.

Sinking things like civilian passenger liners and hospital ships will give you a major penalty and quite possibly shorten your career with a court-martial from the BdU.

Passenger ships that have been converted into troop transports are fair targets.

Depending on the year and month, Norwegian shipping becomes valid targets with the start of Operation Weserübung, on or around 9, April 1940.

Don't forget that most of Ireland was neutral throughout the war, so be careful to check for Irish flags on those merchies when you're west of England.

There are also a large number of American ships that sail the waters around the Irish Sea so be careful not to sink too many of them until America officially enters the war on 11, December 1941, the date Germany officially declared war on the United States.

Any other, more experienced kaleuns that can double-check me on this info?

Humm I don't know what GWX 2.1 is... how do I know if Im using? I just installed Silent Hunter 3 from steam because it looked interesting and its probably one of the best games I've ever played

I don't think Im at april 1940 yet in my career, I think feb. 1940 or so. So I guess my question is, is it worth sinking neutral tonnage or no?

-Thanks.

Welcome aboard.

Right now you're just using the stock (probably) 1.4b game. If you check your main screen (Naval Academy, etc.) it will probably have a little 1.4 at the bottom right of the screen.

GWX is one of a number of major modifications to the game. The current version is 2.1. See this thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=102096 for details about it. If you're still interested the mod can be found at: http://thegreywolves.com. You may want to hold off on getting GWX until you've played the stock game for a bit. GWX makes many major changes to the game and you might get turned off if you just dive right in to it.

I don't bother with neutrals. In the stock game there is a penalty for it & it's just a waste of ammunition. Neutrals can report your position if they spot you and will treat you as hostile for 24 hours if you sink one of them; example: if you sink an Irish merchant you will be attacked by any Irish warship, armed merchant or aircraft that spots you for the next 24 hour period. If you're currently in Feb '40 Norway is still neutral.

Hope this helps...
