Okay, so Maybe it's getting too realistic...

I was playing last evening, just got to my patrol grid, it was about 2100 hours, waves up, wind blowing, but clear. Suddenly we hear ship spotted, Its a Grandville freighter getting tossed around and coming at us. I have us at a depth of 7 meters, decks awash, I get within 1000 meters, fire one off and watch it from the binoculars, it must have hit the coal bunkers because a truly amazing explosion occurred. Explosion after explosion, as I watch men getting tossed into the air.

Sinks in seconds but as I slowly approach the wreckage, there are the few life boats, I'm thinking to myself..."I actually feel a little sorry for them, just a little twang of remorse, they had no idea it was coming, all warm and snug in their beds, and what in this weather, and it's only going to get worse, I watch them as they slip from view.

I'm feeling a little low as we go back to course, actually tell my wife "that sucks this is alttle too real", and then I hear "New Message rec'd" some 30 seconds later.

I swear the message says, You know that our policy is no rescues, no one is to be picked up regardless of weather or location. We must harden ourselves to the realities of this war.

There must be Guestapo on board and reported my actions to BDU!

Bastards!

Dont worry... depending on your location a lot of those survivors will have frozen to death before first light.

when it comes to real life:

Disperse some water and one or two large dry blankets if available and sail on.

You might even ask them if they managed to get off a distress signal... if not, ask the name of their ship and send a distress signal for them on open frequency. make no mention of any U-boat. of course.

the best thing that can happen is another nearby ship will reach them within a couple of hours, or perhaps a flying boat will come along and land to claim them.

worst case scenario.... sailor-cicles

lol
You can see why the devs never put them in SH3

Early war you could have rescued them and dropped ashore somewher
The Laconia incident put paid to that

I think the survivors mod was delayed because of the
'Shock Factor'.

As most users are of the older, more mature type?
We tend to use 'imagination'.

Now that it smacks us in the face?
At first, it is a shock!!

Then We look at the work done to bring it all about.
And realize just how many people are doing fantastic things.
And all for free.

I am not a big fan of the survivors stuff.
But I, along with others, work it and add to it.
Not to give Shock value.
But to present the reality that was, infact,
a part of History.

Every U-Boot Crew out there faced this.
They had no choice but see this side of the War.

We have a choice.
Don't add the mod if it bothers you.

But I still use it.
It just makes it all that much real.

And I tend to sink things a little less important.

But as I always say?
It's your game.
Play it how you want!!

US Merchantmen (sailors) lost - check out this:

http://www.usmm.org/casualty.html

I had the chance to spend 2 days on a liberty ship doing some intel before we went out to find and film one u/w. He (on board caretaker in late 70's) had 3 ships sunk from underneath him. He gave me private tour of the vessel (business related) into every nook and cranny. I do not think we can ever understand what sacrifices these men made. They had a hard life I can tell you.

Yes the casultys are a part of war, on land, sea,or in the air. There is always people killed. Thats why war is hell, cause if it was fun it would happen more often. Good find PappyCain.

We should also remember the 30,000 German submariners killed, which is 75% of all who started at least one war patrol.
