Thanks for the report. It's sad to see another one pass, but he lived a good long life.

Yes it's true that McQeen's character was total fiction.

But it sold the movie.

I did enjoy the movie, but I did also realise that there were alot of tall tales told in the movie, compared to what happened in real life. Sad to haer that one of the few left from that time has now gone.

I liked the movie but wished it was a bit more true to reality. James Colburns Aussie accent was painful to listen to.

May I suggest...

Read the book of the same name by Paul Brickhill. It has a more "documentary" feel to it.

And please, if you do decide to purchase it, make your purchase through the Subsim link.

Read it years ago.

Might i also suggest:

"The Wooden Horse" by Eric Williams which is about another escape from the same camp.

A couple other related non fictions:

"Escape from Colditz" by Pat Reid
"Kriegie" by Kenneth Simonds

Sad to see another go. The Telegraphs obits will be starting to get a bit dull from now onwards.

I can recommend

Stalag Luft III: The Secret Story:
by Arthur A. Durand

I was stationed with Col. Durand in the 1990's and he is a pretty disciplined researcher. His book is not an easy read but well written on the topic.
