Pocket lint has some youtube video of CNN attacking GTAIV
How can they say that the kids are trained to be killers when they are too busy playing the game to leave the house! To me the only violence the game engenders is that suffered by the parents trying seperate the kids from the console at dinner time!

A bit OTT, you can't say that because someone played CS that its the reason why he went on a rampage. Surely the reason is the extremely lax gun control laws in the USA, coupled with someone who was known to be mentally unstable.
I do however think that GTA is getting a bit too much now, and that it should be restricted to adults. The problem there is adults will buy the game for kids without thinking so its not fool proof. I know the difference between a game and real life, and all of you most likely do too. Its just that a small minority who play the game obessively (who plays GTA for 15 hours a day?!?!?!?! Insane!) who may go on to commit crimes. But then again its a childish repsone to the "why did you do it?" quesiton "GTAIV made me do it sir!". Thats like me getting stopped for speeding and saying "the go faster stripes made me do it officer!" ![]()

I remember when I was a kid living in England when Clockwork Orange came out. One of the scenes was of a homeless guy being beaten to death. After the movie ran there were a few cases of homeless people being beaten to death. They caught some and they said they got the idea from the movie.

Dear Media Inbred Sensationalist Retards...
I recently discovered that CNN has actively and openly taken a stance against the "murder simulator" of GTAIV. However, I believe it would be in my good graces to point out the difficulty in calling GTAIV a "murder simulator" as it is often labeled. For instance, when I picked up a pistol and started using it in GTA, I discovered to my surprise that their was no recoil or upswing in my controller! The rumble vibration of the controller does little to mimic this except, hence it's name, jostle about a little. After running out of ammo, I pressed the "B" button to reload and discovered to my great surprise that the character immedietly removed the magazine and inserted a new one into the weapon on his own! Without my direct intervention or aid! The only part of this process I participated in was simply telling him when to do it! Rather perplexing then to refer to it as a way of "teaching people to kill" when the only thing it teaches them is that pressing B = character adds more numbers to his gun counter. I also find it rather difficult to claim similar for driving. Since much of the actual process is removed for the sake of convienience. Indeed, when Mr. Bellic entered a car I told him to get into, he immedietly started the car by himself and was even kind of enough to turn on the lights for me on a dark night! Were this an actual simulator, I would have immedietly moved the transmission lever from "Park" to "Drive", but yet again Mr. Bellic was kind enough to do this for me! So you will have to understand why I consider it somewhat perplexing when a media personality throws a rather infantile tantrum and claims that such matieral is teaching people how to murder fellow men. (I haven't even begun to talk about the AI of who's patterns, like with all games, eventually become predictable. Almost comically so.) Perhaps I wouldn't consider this subject worth my effort if it wasn't for the media's peculiar fascination with such things as this, instead of George W. Bush's numerous Bill of Rights infractions or ignorance towards the plight of regions such as Darfur, or how big the ball of heroin currently within the chambers of your bowel is. But alas, I am only one of America's horribly corrupted, atheist, non-Republican youth. Merely a concerned citizen, Hawkeye |

GTA is not for kids. Violent video games won't turn a normal kid into a criminal. An abnormal kid with existing emotional issues may have these tendencies enhanced. To me, the solution is for the parents with kids with violent emotional problems not to allow these abnormal kids to play violent video games. Parents with normal kids who don't have violent emotional problems can, at their discretion, allow their kids to play the video games. Don't punish the massive majority of normal kids who play violent video games and go on to live normal lives because there were a tiny minority of abnormal kids who play violent video games and go on to live abnormal lives. I was brought up on violent movies and TV shows. When I as an adult along came video games (I am old!) I play violent video games a lot. I have never committed an unlawful violent act against another person. I am, by my nature, not a violent person. I like to play violent video games as recreation. Evan as a stupid kid, I was able to tell the difference between a violent movie, book, comic, TV show and reality. Never got the two confused. My kids? Also grew up with violent movies, books, comics, TV shows, and video games. While they may be losers who can't hold a job (grrrrrr), none of them are violent criminals. I suppose an argument can be made that violent movies, books, comics, TV shows, and video games could be an enabling trigger for a pre-existing mental problem. But to make the argument that violent movies, books, comics, TV shows, and video games can create a mental problem is spurious.

That's the thing isn't it? Their actually is a grain of truth to the "violent video games encourage violence" argument. But that's only a PART of the enviornment the child is raised in. Guys like Jack Thompson and those like him are simpletons. Like all social problems, youth violence is a complex problem with complex causes. Guys like Thompson, CNN, and their kind are simpletons, and they want simple, easy answers to life's problems. Don't like abortion? Just pass a law and the problem is solved. Think booze is bad? Just make it illegal and everything is okay. Why is divorce rate so high? Because we're not religious enough. How do we curb youth violence? Get rid of violent games and movies. And so on.
Their IS a lot of violence in modern society. And therein lies the problem. Most of these ****ing baby-boomer parents are soft, weak and cowardly. They're afraid of taking any responsibility for themselves because it might damage their reputations or careers. They prefer to use the younger generations as scapegoats to cover for their own inadequacies. The only thing they ever do is project all of their problems onto everyone else. Everytime I see an idiots like these complain about "violent video games", it goes to show just how badly the baby boomers have failed as a generation. |

Too many parents either don't care or they want an easy way to shut their kids up or they want to be their kids best friend. I used to think my mom was mean because if Halloween or a Friday the 13th movie was on she wouldn't let me watch it (that is just one example). I didn't understand why my parents did what they did when I was growing up and I thought they were mean but now as an adult I know what their intentions were and I am thankful for it. I personally have no problem with a game like GTA IV but if a parent lets their kids have a game like that or (even worse) buy it for them the parents should get their heads checked. |

It's strange that parents will often stop kids getting a hold of adult movies but when it comes to a game they say "oh well it's only a game".
It does seem like Rockstar go out of their way with each new release to cause a storm in the press, and I think in many ways they cause the whole industry to be tarred with the same brush. I remember reading in an article a long time ago about the early days of Microprose that the original "Silent Service" was too real a ww2 experience for German Youth and as such it was banned from sale in regular stores and only available in sex shops! how times change.
