Default Targeting

How come sometime when I am using the UZO or Attack scope and have locked onto my target I will look at the ship manual that shows my target ship, and it will show the weak spots on the ship, but not all the time?
It is not the crew experiance as it comes and goes. It also shows up sometimes in single missions.

Thanks
Grant

This is to do with your distance from the target ship and your AOB.
In order to get the detailed info on your target ship you need to be within 1000m of the target and at an AOB of 90 degrees (+/- about 20 degrees).

Is this a standard feature at full realism? I use GWX 2.0, and briefly vanilla SH3 1.4, and I never recall seeing that feature. It'd be very handy to know!

I always thought it was a mod. In either case it's not very realistic. They didn't have anything like that.

I agree, and with manual targeting I'm happy if I even hit the ship as I don't yet have the ability to target particular areas with any accuracy.

However, if I was an experienced u-boat Kaleun and was familiar with the general build of ships I would probably understand that the engine room is (usually) under the funnels and there are likely to be magazines under the guns. Once I was within 1000m I'd be more likely to recognise these points and may be able to target them.

SH3 Kaleuns don't have the life long experience that a career naval officer would have, and I found that this extra information helped my education when I first started SH3.

Default Now I know

Thanks now I know why it is so rare that I see it. Normally I do my targeting.
Ruff seas one in the bow. Calm seas one in the stern if possible.
But always setting my own torpedo depth.
