I don't know if you will hate yourself or not, but I'll tell you that three weeks ago my sister purchase a notebook computer. She opted for XP as the OS. All the S-ware she owns works and no questions.

I'm going to wait for a Service Pack or two until I upgrade.
I plan to keep this computer for as long as possible, so eventually I'll ahve to get rid of XP. Also, I like some of Vista's features like ReadyBoost. SUBMAN seems to be the person to ask here.

My brother installed Vista on his laptop about a month ago too... and he really likes the animated desktops. Figured you'd like to know. Aside from you sister's software miraculously continuing to work on the OS it was designed for... are you implying that her suite of software would not function properly under Vista? I'm thinking perhaps I might get some performance gains outta my 64 bit processor. However, I fear that I might be upset that some of my favorite games will no longer work. :hmm: |

Yes, to be honest you probably will, but having said that, there are advantages to using Vista.
If you can get it free via a pre-install on a new laptop or desktop purchase (as I did), then you are laughing. I had to do this, because for one I needed a laptop, and secondly, since I teach people software applications, it would be kind of stupid if I had no experience with Vista. Also this is the only really sensible option if you are in Europe, as Vista is massively overpriced in comparison to its retail cost in the US. Advantages are that you will be up to speed on the 'latest thang', and of course many new applications load and run very much better and quicker on Vista (FSX is a good example of this, where it is notably faster than on XP). It's pretty too, if that sort of thing floats your boat, personally I run XP and Vista in Classic mode so I couldn't give a toss about pretty window menus. Powerboost is one of Vista's best features however, and very cool if you are running short of RAM, so that might be a decider for you if you run HUGE files in stuff like Photoshop or 3DSMax. Disadvantages, probably quite a bit of the software you already own won't like it. Vista also has totally paranoid default security settings too, which are frankly bloody annoying. Also note that Microsoft are already working on Vista's replacement and well along the way with it, so it's looking like like it won't have the longevity of XP, which given the mixed response that Vista has received, is probably going to be around for quite some time. Virtually all MS operating systems are crap when released as you probably know, so things might change, but I wouldn't expect to see Vista as MS's flagship OS in five years time, that's my guess. If you buy Vista to run on your current computer, you may possibly see a performance drop however, since the fact that they wanted to make Windows pretty like OSX, it's now more of a resource hog, so you can be just like a Mac owner now, with an overpriced and underpowered machine :rotfl: Anyway, just a few heads up about what I've found, others might disagree with my assessment, so, in the end, I guess it's up to you. ![]()

I'm using Vista (albeit x86, not x64 (which I'm kicking myself for, by the way)) just fine here. I happen to like it and haven't really come across any problems with it thus far. My grandfather had a minor issue with an HP printer driver for an older printer (which I was able to jury-rig), but other than that, both he and I have not run into any real problems. Be warned though...it IS different from XP and takes some time to get used to.

I bought a new computer with Vista on it, took forever to get used to the new quirks, I got some old games that don''t work on it but then again they were questionable on XP.
@JSLTiger Since I got this I can't get the printer to work and its an old HP Deskjet. What did you guys do to fix it? |

So does SH3 run OK on Vista?
Probably the only game I would really miss... |

Only half your old software will work, and you will take a performance hit, and do not get the 64 bit version - it is driver restricted. I've loaded machines up with the 64 bit version and it is more headache than it is worth! I bet you have a printer at home, and you can't even get a driver for it on the 64 bit version. Stick with 32 bit Vista if you do make the change.
I estimate it will cost about $1000 per machine out here at work to upgrade software that no longer works on the new OS. I have two machines running Vista personally (I have 10 copies, and out of 10, I only care to use 2), including my personal laptop (Acer 4400) but on my main system I still run MCE 2005. Think of it like this - Vista to me is similar to Windows ME of the 98 series. You really wanted Windows 98 SE if you could get it, but were stuck buying Windows ME. As long as they don't force me to use DirectX 10 for something, I'll stick with XP Pro / MCE 2005. Just my take on it. -S |

@Blue3Golf:
My grandfather's specific printer was an HP Photosmart P1000. After some checking around on the web, I found out that if its installed manually as a 930C/932C/935C series printer, the P1000 will work. However, this does come at a price, and that is the fact that the built in media-card reader on the printer will no longer work (which, given the fact that one is built into his machine, is irrelevant for him).

Thus far... the poll is in agreement 3:1 with Subman's assessment.
Yeah I got an HP printer, but it's a fairly new "all-in-one". Nice printer n all but the freakin software/driver is on par with malware; runnin all sorts of crap in the background when I don't want it to. Caused me enough headache that I completely uninstalled it. Now if I wanna print something I save it to my camera flash card and plug it straight into the printer... kinda sad. ![]() |

Hold on, I was not advocating Vista. I just said that I could get SHIII to run on my machine.
